Solve : can't get domain name to be accessible online? |
|
Answer» So I am hosting my own website on my computer. I have already installed apache and bought a domain name. I configured my router based on the attached jpg. My router's ip address is 192.168.0.1 btw. I also have my domain name mapped to my ip address. ...First thing is to have your Desktop in perfect shape. And don't ever use it for takes that stress your PC to its performance limit. That could crash Apache. Second thing, your ISP company has to let you have 24/7 service and almost unlimited bandwidth. And HIGH speed, in case your web site becomes very populat. The third thing is you should be using a server OS, not a desktop OS. Both Windows and Linux make a distribution between the two flavors f OS. So you should change over to using a server as your only OS on that PC. You Already have Apache, that's good. Do you also have installed a kind of SQL? And will you install a version of PHP? Not always required, but useful. Also, Pearl and maybe some other stuff like that for use on a server. In addition to the three things above, there are some other matters to deal with too keep costs down and performance high. Sign up with a dynamic DNS management service. Be aware that static DNS takes about 24 hours to propagate. Setup your router and firewall to let incoming messages from the Internet get into you box. You have to figure that out yourself. No easy answer. Think about a plan to backup all you hard work. Maybe even a spare PC in case of a major hardware failure. The point I want to make, is you can hardly save money doing it yourself. Of course, you never said that. I just made an assumption. Is cost an issue? For a few dollars a month you rent service that takes care of all the details. I have owned over one hundred domains and never tried to put any on a home server. But maybe I missed out on a lot of fun! A word of of caution. Be careful about who you trust. There are some out there that might 'help' you and then take your money or your domain. Something like that happened to me. Well, apparently many think is is so easy... Here is a collection of Videos. How to use dynamic DNS host a "website".Thank you! You're right. This is my first time putting a website online. I'll research more into this. I originally wanted to host my own blog on my desktop computer bc I thought it'd be cool to try and a friend of mine did it. Money is not particularly the issue. Also, I was wondering what you thought of hosting a website inside a virtual machine with a server os on your desktop computer. You would have apache, mysql and php installed in that vm and would be able to limit the amount of space apache consumes. Do you think your host computer would be more secure then? Even the military have had issues. http://nakedsecurity.sophos.com/2009/03/20/suspected-pentagon-hacker-wolfenstein-arrested/ Drop me a PM and I will let .you have some space somewhere on a sub domain. You can play with different free blogs and other cool stuff. After a few weeks I mill have to take it down, but you an play with it and get a feel for what people do with a web site. Don't give me your domain name. I will use your 'anon123' as a sub domain on one of my inactive sites. Send me a PM if you like this. And no, I will not sell you anything. The site is inactive and I have already paid my dues. |
