Solve : computer problem please help!?

Answer»

i have a PROBLEM with my computer. i have not STARTED up the computer in 3 months and when i did i noticed a problem that i have come across before. that problem was resolve by itself after a week of not turning on the computer.

the situation is that when i turned on the computer it seems to start up fine but then i get a "no signal input" on my monitor. after farther inspection i realize that my hdd is not booting up. ive put new idd cables for the hdd but nothing happened, i have also took out everything and put it back in and that did not solve the problem. i disconnected my main hdd but my secondary hdd in, but i get the same problem.

what could be causing this? You need to give more information. Did you every get the display that indicates the computer is starting? Does the computer make a beep? do the lights on the keyboard flash after you turn it on?
How did you know the HDD was not working?
Does this computer have a floppy drive? Did you try a floppy first? Are you using an onboard video card? If so you MIGHT try adding a video card to you computer and if so you would have to change the set up in the bios. If you have a video card what happens when you use the onboard? Also just like geek said, how do you know the hdd is not starting if your display is not working?Quote from: Geek-9pm on February 04, 2009, 04:02:33 PM

no sound
Best guess is you have an issue with the PLUG or power cord or power button or power switch.
Unplug from the wall, wait a minute or two.
Plug in and notice the fan on the Power Supply.
Did it do a quick jerk? Try the front panel button.
In there a switch on the back of the power supply?
Flip it. Try the front panel button again.
Flip it again. Press again. Repeat.

The wire pair from the Front Panel Button may have worked loose, or it may have some oxide. (Very thin coast of rust, due to air pollution.) Just put it back where it belongs or jingle it a bit. Then do the on/off press routine again.

there was no quick jerk, and nothing happenedPLEASE SOMEONE HELP ME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!You need to look over the documentation for the motherboard and see it you dislodged the wires to the Front Panel switch.

Otherwise, it would appear that the Power Supply Unit took a dive. Many techs have noticed that when you plug a PSU in the mains, the PSU fan can make a quick jerk and stops. It stops because there is no return from the motherboard to request poser on. In MODEM computers the PSU draws a small bit of power from the mains and monitors the front panel switch. If the button is not closed, it will not send power to the motherboard. (That is a simplified explanation.) Anyway, it makes it hard to diagnose the PSU without special gadget made just to test the PSU. The gadget can cost as much as the PSU, so we just buy another PSU instead of buying the tester! Yet a decent PSU is often cheaper than a motherboard. And you can always use a spare PSU for something. Use it to change your car battery, power you model train set and so on.

Go Buy a PSU!

You can getr a PSU for maybe $40 that is goo enough for an old computer. But a Technician will changer you that much just to look at it! If you can use a screwdriver, you can do it yourself.
