Solve : Curly network question?

Answer»

I have 2 PC's in a home network. One runs XP Pro with SP2 and is connected to the net via a D-Link wireless router. The other PC runs XP Home with SP2 and is connected to the net thru the first machine and a D-Link transponder. Each PC has a separate login for me my wife and our daughter and we have shared files and shared printers on each PC. My question is this: Is it possible to set up the network so that I can access my login on either machine from either machine? In other words if I am logged in to the PC running Pro is it possible for me to set up the network so that I can access material on my login on the PC running Home and vice-versa? If this is possible can someone please give me a CLUE as to how to go about it?I do believe it's called a "Roaming User".

Not sure how to set it up, but with knowing what it's called a google search, or a search in the mothership should kick something up...in fact:

Don't make me use the classic example.. Roaming profiles are used in windows (ACTIVE directory) domains, ussually.
As he explain his problem, I don't see the fact that one computer is a file server, so that every time he changes his computer will be able to reach for that network share.

Simply explained, dave2868, for doing that you need to create the same accounts on each computer where you want to use the same password. If you want to have common desktop background on both computers (and a few other common settings for the two computers) you have to create a new windows share, and the computer with that share should be on all the time you want to use your "roaming ACCOUNT". I think you are over reacting to a problem which involves file transfer: why don't you simply use those network shares? Create a directory, "share" it, apply security settings on it, and move through it all the files you need to move.Quote from: Raptor on May 17, 2007, 01:54:34 PM

If it looked like fun, I would. Simple as. So I sose I could just use the sharing folders but I was curious to know if it was possible to access my login for each computer from either computer. Yes they are the same password and no I'm not concerned about having the same background etc. It would be NICE to be able to do things like run Adaware and Spybot on both PC's from the one place, without having to walk from one room to the other and do it on both machines. Or even defrag from one PC etc. Maybe I'm over reaching myself but it was an interesting proposition. You still have to create the same accounts on both computers.
For what are you asking maybe RealVNC or something similar may help you. By "create the same accounts on both computers" do you mean we each have to have the same login and password on both computers?? If thats the case then we already have, but I cannot see anything on the other computer except the sharing folder and the shared printers. I want to be able to use either PC to access the other and I cant figure out a way to do that with my current set up. I dont know whether the set up is wrong or whether I am asking too much of the network. If it is possible to do then I wanna try it..... if its not possible then I need to know that too.Yes, that is what I mean.

For being able to control one computer from a remote computer (another computer) you may try RealVNC. It is freeware. You have to install it on both computers (all computers). You have to know the IPs of those computers when you want to use it.

It is very simple to use, if you know how to access a network share from one computer to another you will be able to use this program. Install it using the default options (to start as a service etc) with ONE BIG EXCEPTION: set up a password on each computer (in RealVNC options I mean) on which you install RealVNC. More info on internet.
Of course there are other programs that do the same thing: allow you to GAIN control of a remote computer from the computer you are working on.

You are not asking "too much". The setup is fine if you can access your shares (that is primarily what you want to do with your network, isn't it?). It is possible what you ask, I just pointed you to RealVNC. Please try it and then tell us if it is what you desire.
