Solve : Differentiate b/w processors?

Answer»

Can anyone explain what is the difference b/w laptop processor and desktop processor?
If same, Can we interchange the processors ?

No, you can't interchange them. Laptop processors, like other laptop components, are made smaller to fit in a small computer. Quote from: soybean on November 02, 2009, 08:36:49 AM

No, you can't interchange them. Laptop processors, like other laptop components, are made smaller to fit in a small computer.

This is not always true, however, laptop CPUs are generally soldered in, and do not come with the silver SQUARE (the heat cap) so that means that you will most likely not be able to simply remove it and place it into a desktop board.

In general, the major makers of stuff don;t want a lot of things to be interchangeable. They could be, but they just are not.
The CPU size and muting is one issue, as mentioned above.
Low Heat, low power and low noise levels are more important in a laptop.
In a Desktop, high performance and low cost are the key factors.

Any of course, the size and weight and marketing factors also. Small desktops have been popular, buy lack top performance.

So far, we are not yet at the far limit of how small, fast and economical you can make a computer chip. So maybe the laptop and desktop market will yet merge.

Take a look at the Intel designs use in the new net books. You can also get a desktop motherboard that can use the same chips.

According to this, we can't change the processor in cpu. I don't no how far it is true...
Then how can i replace it with core I7 extreme processor.....
I wanna do it . any other solutions if the above is true....Quote

If the laptop MBoard isn't Socket 1156 then you cannot do it...
This means the laptop has to be approx 1 year old or less...

I'd like someone to find an example of a CPU that was made for both a desktop and laptop ...Quote

Maybe this would be a place to start..

Pick what you want and find who makes it. Find one that works in both a laptop and a desktop...Quote from: Vikram Varaprasad on November 04, 2009, 10:38:43 PM

Package size and pinout are completely different. A few years ago Toshiba sold some laptops with desktop CPU's. Battery life was less than 1 hr and they got so hot, you couldn't keep the computer on your LAP. In some cases, mobile CPU's are used in desktops. They are now making Intel Atom motherboards. It's all about power comsumption, mobile CPU's use far less power than desktop CPU's.That was my point and Thanx CC...
They ran too hot for laptops and the experiment did not last long.Quote from: patio on November 05, 2009, 09:28:40 AM

Again, you are right.

But they may try it again.
Here was one awhile back:

Memory512MB DDR SDRAM (2 x 256MB) at 333MHz
Dimensions40 cm (15.67 inches) L x 28 cm (10.94 inches) (W) x 4 cm (1.67 inches) Front H x 5 cm (1.85 inches) Rear H

* 120W AC adapter
* 12-Cell Litium-Ion battery
Maybe they will try again!That's also awhile back....
