Answer» Urban Myths. One reason for this is the outrageously wrong urban lore involvingfrom Geek's link. This website... is pretty radical, to begin with... and whether this is just a scam to advertise the website's rambling eBook "The Case Against Patents" is up for debate. The website also has several really irrelevant links such as this:http://www.tinaja.com/magsn01.asp Quote The following information is speculative and not yet proven. A quick search on google for "GGMS Magic Sinewaves" leads me to believe the website author is engaged in radical pedantry. All the links have some relation with http://tinaja.com/. http://electronics.wesrch.com/page-summary-pdf-EL11TZUFUUDXM-some-fifth-generation-magic-sinewaves-3 What GGMS means. Golly, Gee, MISTER, Science. I'm serious. The topic is not about "Magic Sine Wave" But instead "Do not patent your invention. Ever." Others have EXPRESSED this idea. http://www.dontfileapatent.com/ http://www.davidlewispatentagent.com/ForManyPeoplePatentsareaWasteofMoney.html http://erikjheels.com/2167.html This last one is not directly about patents, but it would draw one to the conclusion that patents are not relevant to progress. Please give a look. http://www.fastcodesign.com/1662118/infographic-of-the-day-does-the-us-waste-money-on-innovation Did you notice how he did a nice bubble graph to make his point? If that got your interest, here is an article on how to do a bubble chart. http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/excel-help/creating-a-bubble-chart-HA001117076.aspx The point being made is the most good ideas have already been used by somebody and trying to patent something is often a form of deception when you claim nobody every did it before. Those who benefit from patent law are those who have the money and the nerve to claim they were first. As for Don Lancaster, is was and is a well-respected author in his field. He has had opportunities to fill patents. Instead, he wrote and used copyright law to protect his work. So my reason for quoting him is that his background makes him qualified to have an expert option on the value of patents for entrepreneurs. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Don_Lancaster Quote For most individuals and SMALL scale startups, patents are virtually certain to result in a net loss of time, energy, money, and sanity. First line from Don's website. I don't really think his targets are people like Apple and Google. People said the same thing 100 years ago. And 100 years before that. People now think we've discovered all we can discover and there's nothing left to come up with, just like they have throughout history. While some people might have the same or similar ideas, people do still come up with original ideas that do help society. We are still making advances in all fields, be it computers or medicine or automotives or anything else. There are new ideas all the time because if we can dream it we will find a way to do it and there is no limit to the human imagination... unfortunately the same could be said about human stupidity as well.My point was that if the great majority of people are trying to patent such useless ideas like "Magic Sine Wave," by all means, I agree with you. However, like quaxo said, "We are making advances in all fields..." We are still progressing, and people deserve credit for the work they have done. It's probably affiliated with "timecube.com". There are PLENTY of idiotic sites like this. In this case, it appears to be analogous to the idea that a stopped clock is right twice a day. In any case, considering the scope here, this borders on the concept of software patents which is oftentimes bloody ridiculous. For the longest time a person could use LZW encryption, or write bitmap files, but if their software wrote LZW Compressed bitmap files (GIF images) they could get into trouble, unless you paid somebody for the privilege of combining two things into an obvious almagation. Basically, Unisys patented the combination of two existing ideas. How the *censored* can you do that? Can I patent the idea of a bicycle with a elephant on it? Probably not. I wouldn't go so far as to say "everything has been invented" and there is certainly a reason to patent certain otherwise innovative combinations of existing inventions. But a lot of them are really nothing more than a metaphorical pidgeon stapled to a rat and called a bat. Quote from: BC_Programmer on September 27, 2011, 09:38:10 AM Can I patent the idea of a bicycle with a elephant on it? Probably not. No, you can't. I already own the patent on that. See you in court. Quote from: quaxo on September 27, 2011, 10:16:21 AM No, you can't. I already own the patent on that. See you in court.Oh YEAH! Well I have a patent on taking people to court for cases involving an animal on top of a two-wheeled transportation device! You better be ready for my mind-blowing counter-claim!Someone should patent this: This link below has nothing to do with the topic. It is for those who are want to know about sine waves and a the other waves. In is not magic. http://mathworld.wolfram.com/FourierTransform.html An no, you can not patent it. Unless you have the money. Quote from: BC_Programmer on September 27, 2011, 10:20:09 AM You better be ready for my mind-blowing counter-claim! Sorry, I have a patent on "mind-blowing counter-claims". You better try something else. Quote from: quaxo on September 27, 2011, 10:11:09 PM Sorry, I have a patent on "mind-blowing counter-claims". You better try something else.something else. IS MINE Quote from: Geek-9pm on September 27, 2011, 11:49:04 PM something else. IS MINE You can say that again... |
