Hey,

You can download software to do this.  I have used CoreTemp (http://www.alcpu.com/CoreTemp/) and it seems to work well.I just tried CoreTemp, and I hate to say, the readings were totally off mark by a whole TWENTY degrees.
While Everest, SpeedFan, and CPU RightMark read 22-23C, CoreTemp reads 43-44C! Quote from: Broni on April 10, 2009, 02:07:51 PM

Thanks Broni.  I have used SpeedFan as well.  I have not had problems with coretemp, but if you have, he should probably use speedfan since that is a good program too. It's interesting. I'll try it on my laptop, and see what happens.I am interested to see the results.Same thing on my laptop.
Everest, SpeedFan - 43C, CoreTemp - 63C.......20 degrees difference.Interesting.  I will have to try it again.  I am pretty sure I wasn't checking them both at the same time and comparing.I'll be CURIOUS to see, too.My fan is running at 100% and it's SOOO loud, and my stats are:

Solve : HDMI cables, $10 vs $35 vs $150?

Answer»
I'm looking for an HDMI cable to connect my laptop to my 4k smart TV. What, besides the length, brand, and color, are the differences between each HDMI cable? Is one brand better than another? Why would I spend $150 on an HDMI cable when I can spend $35, or $10? What's the difference between a $10 cable and a $35 or $150 HDMI cable? Thanks.

As with pretty much anything you buy, the law of diminishing returns comes into play.  In other words the more you PAY, the less you get for your money.  The $150 HDMI cable may have less resistance and be better able to handle higher frequencies as measured by sophisticated test equipment but WHETHER that will actually translate to a difference you can see with your eyes is another matter.  Generally speaking, the middle price POINT is where you will get the best bang for your buck. Thanks for your reply strollin. It sounds like "you get what you pay for" but only up to a certain price point.
Lots of things to take into account, such as game console use (high frame rates) whether cable has ethernet as well, MATCHING your TV's capabilities such as HDR, Dynamic HDR, eARC, Variable REFRESH Rate.

Read all about it here:

Solve : Laptop stupid?

Which laptop looks, uses wise, better (I am stupid when it comes to them) https://www.target.com/p/hp-11-6-34-stream-laptop-with-windows-10-s-mode-32gb-storage-white-160-11-ak0035nr/-/A-79945035#lnk=sametab or https://www.target.com/p/hp-14-34-stream-touchscreen-laptop-with-windows-10-s-mode-64gb-storage-indigo-blue-14-fq0037nr/-/A-80339962#lnk=sametab just SEARCH web with it. I AM NOT GOING TO LOOK AT OTHERS OR GO WITH USED. JUST WANT ADVICE ON THESE TWOThis one of the 2, https://www.target.com/p/hp-14-34-stream-touchscreen-laptop-with-windows-10-s-mode-64gb-storage-indigo-blue-14-fq0037nr/-/A-80339962#lnk=sametab

32gb of storage is to hard to manage, you would need to do house keeping every week or so just to be able to keep it usable. So that rights off buying the  HP 11.6" Stream Laptop with Windows 10 S Mode.

Both run windows 10 in S mode see here about S mode limitations.
https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/windows-10-in-s-mode-faq-851057d6-1ee9-b9e5-c30b-93baebeebc85#:~:text=Windows%2010%20in%20S%20mode%20is%20a%20version%20of%20Windows,10%20in%20S%20mode%20page.

I wouldn't WASTE my money on either of them. Not looking to storage anything so that is not a big deal to me
Don't let S mode deter you, a computer can be switched out of S mode (but then can't be switched back).  However, even 64GB of storage is pretty TIGHT, I personally wouldn't want less than 128GB of storage.

Between the 2 you posted, go with #2.  It has a bigger screen, FASTER processor and twice as much storage.  It costs $70 more but it's worth it.  #2 also has a touchscreen if that's of interest to you.I read the customer reviews on the 64GB one - told me all I needed to know, LEAVE well alone.

Solve : 4TB External HDD Recommendations?

Answer»

I'm looking for a 4TB External HDD. What brands or models are currently recommended? What subpar brands or models should I avoid and ignore? Seagate and WESTERN Digital seem to be the BIG brands but what's the difference? Thank you.I suggest a My Passport Ultra from WD

It's a standard format drive not SMR (Shingled MAGNETIC recording)  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shingled_magnetic_recording
Powers down when not in use, parking the heads off the platers.
Western Digital designs the circuit board and Firmware  for USB operation. Other manufactures use standard 2.5" drives with a SATA to USB interface often using a drive which needs more current to start than the USB port can deliver.
Hi

SEEMS you have brought an SMR format drive, if it is the model with the black textured case make sure you don't rely on it as the only copy of your files. You shouldn't rely on 1 copy anyway.
I disagree about you comment that pen drives are not reliable. I have expensive pen drives which are 18 years old which are still working daily. Like most things you get the quality you PAY for.

Actually, this is a common misconception; see, a toaster can also be used for English Muffins and bagels and so forth; why reduce the number of supported implementations of the IToastable interface? Just because it is also a mouse does not justify it to reduce the functionality of one of it's component blended appliances.

Solve : Smart Defrag?

Answer» http://www.download.com/Smart-Defrag/3000-2094_4-10759533.html?tag=nl.e415

Publisher's DESCRIPTION of Smart Defrag
Disk fragmentation is generally main cause of slow and unstable computer performance. Smart Defrag helps defragment your hard drive most efficiently. Smart Defrag not only defragments computer deeply but optimizes disk performance. With 'install it and forget it' feature, Smart Defrag works automatically and quietly in the background on your PC, keeping your hard disk running at its speediest. Smart Defrag is complete free for home, organization, and business.

Editor's review of Smart Defrag
It's hard to stand out in the crowded field of defraggers, but SmartDefrag is able to do so with an unexpected twist.

Along with quick analysis and scans, SmartDefrag boasts an automated defragger that continually defrags the files that you use the most, and does it without becoming a persistent drag on your SYSTEM resources. When running in the background, the program only eats up 14MB of RAM, so it's possible to run it smoothly on older machines.

Other features we like include a scheduler you can set up to defrag whenever you want and some customization features if you want the program to start when Windows loads or right before logging off. You also can set it to shutdown your computer when it's done defragging your hard drives and partitions.

Overall, if you would like a handy defragger with options for scheduling and more, this is a great defragger for both novices and more experienced users.

Just installed it, and running it.I use it, and I love it.

Nice!

I never BOTHERED with defragging for about a year. Lol, no SURPRISE there, thats when I got Vista.

The only drivers that support my hardware only work with Vista. So I can't downgrade to XP. I tried and then realized the drivers were INCOMPATIBLE.

So now I have a fresh system, I think I'll use this, sounds good. At least I can schedule it for 4am or whenever I decide to go to bed.

Me, too. Installed it on 7/28/08, on my Vista notebook PC. Im gonna wait until I get it I want to a few more people to use it first.

I've been using it for couple of days, and I really like it.Sounds good! I'm gonna give it a try as well!1 Question about smart defrag.should sd be set to start with windows? I noticed the auto defrag.runs once in a while thanksI have it set to start with Windows. That's the whole idea.
After an initial defrag, which took a while, I have maybe 1 defrag a day, which is totally unnoticeable, resource-wise, and it's very quick one. The reason I asked mine is on the 3rd auto defrag. todayMy last one was at 12:37PM today.
Do you see any impact on your computer, like being slower, when defrag runs?No it doesn't slow down .just seems like it analyzes the complete HDD and takes some time doing that..Maybe that's normalMy last one started at 12:22PM, and it finished at 12:27PM - 5 minutesOkay I see the log now 7:17:19-7:17:42 23 seconds 180 GB HDDSee...

Solve : Mozbackup?

Answer»

I'd like to call your attention to a really handy tool that mostly automates the backing-up and restoring of Mozilla Firefox and THUNDERBIRD profiles (Settings, history, saved E-mail, et cetera)

MozBackup

It is a stand alone PROGRAM and not an extension (Or "Add-on" as they refer to them nowadays..)

Usage is very easy, see the manual for pretty pictures and a very decent explanation without even having to read, really; Mozbackup manual

It creates .PCV files which are basically just .ZIP files so you can always DIG through your back-up and edit it manually. Or put it back manually if the program somehow fails.

Definitely a useful program, I've USED it myself before.
Very easy to use and RELIABLE too.

Solve : Relative Value of Utilities?

I know I have too many utilities, I just don't know which to remove in the interests of free memory; duplication; stability; other factors. These are on my HP Pavilion a1350n desktop as well as my Dell Inspiron E1505 -- both with IE7:

Now run CCleaner and restart the computer.Thank you, for prompt reply, evilfantasy.

Assume your removal reference applies to CLEANERS, but there are so many interactions between various other utilities I'm unsure just which you mean (suggest using my numbers 1-30).

Reason I have several of them is experience has shown after CCleaner, others find more to clean -- everything from Windows itself to Window Washer (which was not on the list because I find it so valuable).

Do not believe you intend to have removed only anti-virus program, AVG, among other verieties of utilities, defrag, etc.Just the ones listed should be safe to remove. AVG was not on the list.

CCleaner and Window Washer should be fine. If you are talking about Registry cleaners finding more stuff then it really isn't needed. Any registry cleaner always has a slight danger to using it. Many people have used them and suddenly had a computer that wouldn't boot up. Besides the speed gained from cleaning a registry is so minimal that a human would most likely never notice the difference.

Runing CCleaner and Window Washer now and then is plenty. Then you might want to defrag the hard drive every other month or so.

Personally I would uninstall all of the programs listed below. It's up to you.

4. PC Dr Windows
5. PC Pitstop Driver Alert
6. " " " Optimizer
7. " " " Erase
8. " " " PC Disk MD
9. TweakNow Reg Cleaner

29. GetRight < If you don't use it
30. Privacy Guardian

All you need for security is an antivirus, firewall and I would also suggest using SpywareBlaster and WOT. They don't use much resources. The real security comes from being smart about what sites you visit and what you download. No program will protect you from everything.

WOT - Web of Trust. WOT is a free Internet security addon for your browser. It will keep you safe from online scams, identity theft, spyware, spam, viruses and unreliable shopping sites. WOT warns you before you interact with a risky website. It's easy and it's free.

SpywareBlaster - Secure your Internet Explorer to make it harder for ActiveX programs to run on your computer. Also stop certain cookies from being added to your computer when running Mozilla based browsers like Firefox.
* Using SpywareBlaster to protect your computer from Spyware and MalwareMany thanks indeed. That's just the advice I was looking for and I'll be guided accordingly.

My only hold-back relates to the PCPitstop programs (none free!); and possibly Advanced Windows Care Pro (also not free!).

Interesting that I used to have SpywareBlaster but removed it as redundant and needing more free Memory.

When removing per your valued opinion I'll reinstall it as well as WOT, with which I was totally unfamiliar.

Happy New Year!if my memory serves me right; I did some tests with the free PCpitstop program that used to be distributed.

it wasn't malicous, but it didn't do any good either. On a clean windows 2000 install, it somehow found hundreds of instances of adware/spyware/viruses, which would have made a little sense if the computer had ever been connected to the internet; and then it required the "full version" to do anything further.

Even if their paid version DOES work (and it might, but it cannot possibly remove something that doesn't exist) I don't trust it and place it in the same league as other scam Anti-virus programs, with the exception that this one might actually do something useful (probably not, IMO).

Overall, when searching for new tweaking utilities or cleaner programs, one has to be EXTREMELY careful what you use, or BUY, if the program is a paid program. many are distributed by unscrupulous vendors simply out for the cash; once they have the money and you've got the useless software program that couldn't remove a sticker, you'll find support is non-existent.

regarding your discovery that some registry cleaners can "clean more" then ccleaner... look at it this way- you could clean ALL the cruft from the registry by deleting the entire hive. Of course, there go all the necessary keys... basically, as EvilFantasy said, many of them are simply too aggressive in determining what to remove. Many thanks BC_Programmer.
You've given me pause re PCPitStop as I have had very different experiences with it for quite sometime.

In particular, their OPTIMIZER is used routinely at shut down and I believe it useful without being able to prove it.

Hopefully some otheres will add their comments pro-and-con.

just to clarify: most of what I said regarding "scamware" programs wasn't necessarily directed at PC pitstop; it was merely an observation regarding other programs that I've seen.

After a short search on google, I believe I was mistaken; it appears that PC pitstop is likely a legitimate program. Sorry for any confusion; I must have ENCOUNTERED malware that used it's name. This may also explain the confusion online and the different stories given on multiple locations.

I think it may be in the same league as programs such as "System Mechanic"; for me, System mechanic has many useful tools. However, I opted to keep it off my system because it insists on keeping a background process running, and I simply cannot stand to have more background programs then I need.

This is the trouble with many system management/cleaners optimizer tools; they insist on installing a background process. If you install many of the programs, chances are they will conflict, and at the very least waste processor time.

Glad to have your further comments.

Particularly as regards BACKGROUND PROCESS.
Obviously this is not apparent when checking msconfig startup list, and  various other places, possibly including What's Running.

I'd like to have exact path to use to determine if present at each program.
Thank you!

Cordially, they will be displayed in task manager(processes tab), if they are running; the only one I can remember is System Mechanic's "SMSystemAnalyzer" process;

for starters; how many processes do you have running? For comparison, I have 28.

Evilfantasy made a very good point:

basically, you should only be running what you need. Registry Cleaner programs are known to cause problems, and I personally have dealt with my fair share of them (some requiring a complete format/reinstall  )

many of the programs you are using are a bit extraneous, for example, "privacy guardian". I haven't used it myself, but chances are it's functions can be superceded by a good firewall/anti-virus.

Here is a good way of going about it; remove everything but the base level Antivirus and firewall programs of your preference and CCleaner as well as select other programs (WOT, and spywareblaster, as EF suggested). Run CCleaner a anti-spyware solution (ad-aware or Malwarebytes Anti Malware) every week or so, and defrag relatively frequently as well.

If you feel you need to reinstall on of the other applications afterward, do so, but make sure that you need the program, as opposed to just wanting it (it's a fine line, really).

over time, you'll find that you haven't installed some of the previous applications you had, have programs installed that get used, and have a faster machine.Well, good illustration of my computer ignorance, answer is 40; IE Explorer notable for its 100,444K, which for unknown reasons now shows 99,832K.

Agree as to evilfantasy comments and will implement.

All very educational and helpful. Thanks again. Quote
Interesting that I used to have SpywareBlaster but removed it as redundant and needing more free Memory.

SpywareBlaster only runs while you have it open. Once it's CLOSED it is turned off. What it does is add known bad sites to your Hosts file and blocks the malicious content from loading if you were to venture onto a known bad site. Just be sure to open it and run the updates now and then to keep it current.

PC Pitstop had mixed reviews for a while. They have gone to great lengths to clean up their IMAGE. I fully trust them. Only I have never seen a need to pay for anything they have. You can find most of the tools to do the same thing for free.

More helpful info evilfantasy. Thank you. Happy New Year!  Know this is wrong place but too rushed to correct my error; please excuse!

Thanks, Nathan. Well understand deletions; only wish I had the discipline to do the same!

I thought someone was looking for a program something like this, but I can remember who.....

And if anyone knows of a program that moves the pointer to a specific part of the screen after a TIMEOUT, let me know.

Solve : NoClose to Prevent Window Closure Accidentally?

Answer» http://www.mydigitallife.info/2009/03/30/noclose-to-prevent-window-closure-accidentally/

Occasionally you may accidentally close any windows applications that you are currently working on by mousing over the ‘close button’ at the top right corner of the window. It may still be ok since most of the Microsoft applications already come with ‘auto-saved’ feature but in case there is not, you may want to find a way to be able to lock and prevent the windows from being closed unintentionally.

Once download and execute the program, you will notice a small icon appeared at your SYSTEM tray indicating that the software utility is already running in background. To ACTIVATE it, just use the shortcut key Ctrl + 1 (by default) and it will disable the ‘close Button’ (X) of the active window that you are working on. Pressing on the Ctrl + 1 combination keys again will toggle the locking mechanism off if you have decided to set it back to NORMAL condition. By clicking on Ctrl + 2 hotkeys will allow users to add certain rules so that they can customize its usage based on own preference.

This software utility is quite useful in order to prevent some ITCHY hands especially when your kids are playing in front of your laptop.Works well. Very useful.

Solve : Firefox add-on - UnPlug 2.0?

Answer» https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/2254

UnPlug scans web PAGES and tells you where media players are GETTING their data from, and displays it as a simple hyperlink: in most cases, you can then follow the simple download link to save the media file.

UnPlug works for LOTS of sites including youtube.com, video.google.com, metacafe.com, vimeo.com, veoh.com and lots, lots more.

Unlike many other extensions, UnPlug scans the page, and if it doesn't know there the data comes from it can guess - correctly most of the time.

UnPlug your Plug-Ins and view media however you want! Not bad.I think, I like it better (EASIER to use), than DownloadHelper.Yeah, I have to agree.

DownloadHelper shows you what video is currently being shown on the page.UnPlug didn't work with .FLV files at RTVE Alacarta, whereas DownloadHelper does.
Good to know. Thanks

Solve : List of Antivirus Suites That Presently Work with Windows 7 Beta?

Answer»

If you’ve decided to give WINDOWS 7 a whirl and have recently installed the open now closed beta, you’ll have NOTICED that upon installation you are notified of the fact that you’re lacking proper antivirus software.

This is nothing new and actually has been a “feature” of Windows ever since XP’s SP2 got released and the Security Center came to exist. It’s nothing new either to have a majority of antivirus suites to become incompatible with brand new operating systems - and Windows 7 is no exception, especially more so in its current beta form.

Upon a bit of investigation you probably made your way to the Windows 7 security provider page at Microsoft’s site and perhaps were let down by the fact that the three “officially” supported AVs are all paid software or that your preferred suite isn’t listed (AVG is listed but not the free version). So, we’ve decided to install and test a variety of the more popular options out there so you don’t have to.

We will start things off by confirming that the supported AVs on Microsoft’s page indeed work:

...and your point?I agree...it's still useful info.Since McAfee is not compatible (thank you Lord), we just need to scratch Norton from the list, and we're good to go Part of what BETAS are all about is letting software vendors catch up. By the time 7 goes final I'm sure all of the big name software vendors will have a compatible release.

McAfee, which provides desktop security software that right now can't work with Microsoft's Windows 7 Beta, is working with its counterpart to fix any PROBLEMS and should be A-OK by the time the new operating system is officially on the market.

Also the TS article says 2008. McAfee is on version 2009 now...Good info! Thanks! I'm using my favorite "Avast" on my test machine with Windows 7. I use Cyberdefender and it works great!  If you have any trouble, you can call the 24/7 help DESK line and they will help for any computer problem.  It's stopped a couple of viruses for me so I know it's working gret!

Solve : Create More Than One Set Of Recovery CD On HP Computer?

Answer» http://www.troublefixers.com/create-more-than-one-set-of-recovery-cd-on-hp-laptop-computer/

It may happen when you had created a set of recovery CDs for recovery and REINSTALL of windows but for some reason you are not able to locate the created recovery CD you had created and stored.

It had happened to one of my friend who had a hp laptop, some how she managed to get her laptop repaired and working from the manufacturer but she want to create a new set of recovery CD’s now.

HP laptop or Hp Desktop computer does not ALLOW to create more set of recovery CD be default. Hp does not allow more than one set of recovery CD/DVD as they think that might be used to distribute the operating system software illegally.

Let’s discuss the hack to create more than one set of recovery CDs on HP laptop

Fix:

The basic TRICK behind this is that hp laptop does not allow you to open or navigate the recovery drive contents.

Follow the procedure to create more than one set of recovery CDs

1. Download Free Commander from here: http://www.freecommander.com/fc_setup_.zip

2. Open D:\ drive in Free Commander, assuming d is the recovery partition on your hp laptop computer

3. Find and DELETE a file named HPCD.SYS in D:\ drive root folder

4. Navigate to the windows folder at C:\Windows\SMINST and delete another file with the same name HPCD.SYS

5. That’s it done you can now create new SETS of recovery CDs or DVDsIs there anything to stop a person duplicating a set of recovery CDs?

couldn't you just copy cd or dvd to new ones? like when doing backup for say....

It's all fun until the other person gets to the patent office, first!
I feel like I've said this before, but...EXACTLY!True...and think about it.

It's pretty hard to get a patent(in the US at least), you have to get a lawyer to go through all the papers on getting a patent and i believe that in total its about $1,500 total for a patent.

Then you have to provide techincal diagrams of it, and a paper on how it WOULD be used and so on and so forth.

So you might have some time to get the patent before another person does, unless they have a good amount of funding for it.Try $15,000.00Another way to get a patent and a cool 15 grand is to work at the patent office. lead-pipe: 15$.

knocking out the inventor with the pipe after paying the fee and then submitting it in your own name, priceless.

I could totally spam that site with invention ideas that make no sense.

a car that runs on gerbil paws.

a ejection seat for a car that works instead of an airbag. Airbags can hurt you. Instead the ejection seat shoots you over 1000 feet in the air to safety.

a Table Saw that doubles as a toothbrush. just don't put it in the wrong MODE- you might accidentally brush some wood- or worse...

a CD-ROM that doubles as a sawblade.

a game controller that doubles as surge protector.

a Television set that has a BUILT-IN (!) toaster.

a Toaster that doubles as a robotic manicure machine. again, make sure the right mode is set.

Solve : Sandboxie 3.36?

Answer»

Time to update your sandbox.

13 April 2009 Version 3.36 of Sandboxie is now available for download.

http://www.sandboxie.com/Wow!  I've never heard of sandboxie before!  This is sooo cool for us computer geeks with OCD!!!!It's saved me a few times when investigating sites that I knew might be infected. And allows me to download known malicious software without actually infecting myself.

Just remember nothing is BULLETPROOF. While I have not seen Sandboxie fail yet there is always a chance. Be careful and don't let anything out of the sandbox accidentally. How does sandboxie work/function? Quote

Sandboxie runs your programs in an isolated space which prevents them from making permanent changes to other programs and data in your computer.

When sanddboxed it is sort of like a separate secure browser. Anything running in it will not make any changes to the system files/registry or even touch your hard drive. You can also run software without actually installing it.

Basically it's a virtual environment. Quote from: evilfantasy on April 14, 2009, 08:09:40 PM

Cool...so basically, if I activate the sandbox then run an unknown program, it can't hurt my system?I wouldn't SAY "can't". There is always a chance for error with anything.

If you want to run whatever sandboxed just right click it and CHOOSE 'Run Sandboxed'. It can be your browser or an installer or even an installed program.

To dump everything in the sandbox just right click the little icon in the system tray and make your choice. Quote from: Helpmeh on April 14, 2009, 07:53:41 PM

Exactly what was asked when I posted this program up last year.

Anyways, thanks Evilfantasy. Quote
Anything running in it will not make any changes to the system files/registry or even touch your hard drive

Then where does it go?  Is it downloaded to sandboxie's server or what?C:\Sandbox\

For example, if you install SOMETHING in the sandbox, the program files will go:
C:\Sandbox\Drive\C\Program Files\Program Nameso it does touch your hard drive!!!!!!It's in the sandbox. Clear the sandbox and it's gone.To add to my last post, any registry entries the program creates will be created in the sandbox's registry substitute, which I believe is C:\Sandbox.
Benefits of the Isolated Sandbox

    * Secure Web Browsing: Running your Web browser under the protection of Sandboxie means that all malicious software downloaded by the browser is trapped in the sandbox and can be discarded trivially.

    * Enhanced Privacy: Browsing history, cookies, and cached temporary files collected while Web browsing stay in the sandbox and don't leak into Windows.

    * Secure E-mail: Viruses and other malicious software that might be hiding in your email can't break out of the sandbox and can't infect your real system.

    * Windows Stays Lean: PREVENT wear-and-tear in Windows by installing software into an isolated sandbox. Quote from: evilfantasy on April 18, 2009, 01:16:39 PM

Solve : Panasonic CF-52 Toughbook review.?

Answer»

Horrible. I acquired two of them from a Panasonic rep. They are both brand new in the box. Model GCMBVAM. They appear pretty nice. I sold one. Double boxed it and sent it to the buyer in Ohio with $1500 WORTH of insurance. He said it arrived with a very minimum of handling marks on the outside box and the computer was fine. The inside box is the manufacturer's own shipping box and is well designed for handling. After he took it out and plugged it in for 5 hours it became apparent that it would not turn on. He contacted Panasonic and they thought they knew what was wrong but will not honor the 3 year warranty even though they AGREE it is brand new and he is the first person to attempt to use it. Further, they are estimating the repair to exceed the value of the computer. The board that needs to be replaced is over $1500. This plus shipping and labor approaches $2000. The tech person I spoke with is named Scott and he is very unhelpful. Even more aggravating is this is a known issue at Panasonic. He (tech guy Scott) said that this happens occasionally and they see several of their computers will fail when first taking them out of the box. TOUGHBOOK??? It is my intent to GET this story out to as many folks as possible. I have not gone to Scott's supervisor but I will give that a try but needed a day to think it over. At this time I am having the computer returned to me.
Wow...that sucks.

I've never gotten someone to explain this for me.

I also stay away from Registry TOOLS but the utilities this product CONTAINS is wonderful to have and I recommend it to anyone.

EDIT: Broni can you explain why they are dangerous? The answer is pretty simple. Unless you're troubleshooting some PROBLEM, there is absolutely no business to touch the registry.
No gains earned, but one wrong move, and  a lot of pain is likely to happen.

Then, I can assure you, all other features are available for free, not for $30.

I guess you're right

Give it a try Broni.I agree with Broni.

The registry is not something to be casually "tidied" or "cleaned", and you get no benefit from it. Assigning a cleaning method to ARBITRARY data means that at some point, your going to lose data that is needed.

Mark explains it a lot better then I do. And, you simply cannot argue with him- you haven't any ground to stand on.

And the other tools are available for free. There are free defragmenters, we have CCleaner- and half of those tools are available free as a SysInternals Util (or, at least the STARTUP manager, AutoRuns, which is probably far more full-featured as well). Looks to be a good tool if you have security software that doesn't want to uninstall. This is a Release Candidate so there could be bugs. Use with caution.

AppRemover is a free utility that enables users to completely remove applications and extraneous files LEFT behind.

http://www.appremover.com/Looks interesting. Have you tried it, yet?I uninstalled SpywareBlaster with it. It REMOVED everything BUT the SpywareBlaster folder with the SpywareBlaster uninstaller still in it. Kind of odd that it left that behind.

I think Revo is still king for now. I just tried it on my desktop.
I detected all my security programs, but Comodo firewall, so I assume it works with AV, and antispyware applications.
It detected Avast, Super, Bytes, and TF.Hmm, I did a search of the registry and found a few things that should have been removed.

Solve : Turn Monitor Off?

Answer»

With a little help from RalphSpencer, I have created a small application in C++ that will turn off your computer's monitor.

To wake it up, simply move your mouse or press a key on your keyboard.

C++ Source Code:
Code: [Select]#include <windows.h>
int main(void)
{
 SendMessage(HWND_BROADCAST, WM_SYSCOMMAND, SC_MONITORPOWER, (LPARAM) 2);
 return 0;
  }
I made this so that I can save power on my laptop when not using it at school.
Hopefully this will benefit others.

I haven't experienced any bugs with it, but if any of you notice something strange, please let me know.

Application is attached to this post, but here is a mirror:
http://www.fileupyours.com/files/191176/Monitor%20Off.zip

[ATTACHMENT deleted by admin]We will not be your beta testers!  We defy you!!

That's pretty COOL, actually.Lol. I don't consider it a beta. It's too SIMPLE to be a beta.

THANKS. Alpha ? ?And Gamma.

Three types of Radiation.

And besides that diversion, I wouldn't upload anything here unless it was finished and doing what it was supposed to. Installation instructions?1.copy somewhere.

2.run it.

if you call PostMessage instead it won't hang if one of the running programs is hung as well- either that or SendMessageTimeout. See- always room for improvement.

Name and address, please, just incase it messes up my laptop..... what's it going to do?

it broadcasts a message the computer sends anyway when it shuts the monitor off... Quote

Solve : Hawkscope?

Answer» http://www.mydigitallife.info/2009/04/13/hawkscope-allows-fast-access-to-folders-and-emails-in-single-menu/

Hawkscope Allows Fast Access to Files and Folders with Popup Menu

Sometimes you could be too rush for some tasks that requires fast and easy access to certain files and folders. You may able to put SHORTCUT of files or folders on desktop but if you have too many of them, it will END up to be very messy and that is how this useful UTILITY comes handy with. Named as Hawkscope, it allows users to access to any files directly through a simple pop up menu from system tray.

Once installed and launched the application, users will notice a small icon appeared in the system tray. Click on the icon followed by ‘Settings’ enables users do initial setup on how they want it to be. To setup quick access locations, just browse to ‘Quick Access’ tab then simply add in those desired folders and you are done. On the other hand, users can choose to blacklist certain folders that are not intended to be accessed by clicking on ‘Blacklist’ tab. To make it more useful, there are options that allows users to select specific plugins or special applications so that it will be used to open certain directories at own preference.

Hawkscope consumes around 2MB and is compatible with almost every Windows OS (Operating Systems) ranging from Windows 3.x, Windows 98, 2000, XP and Server 2008. Only one prerequisite, it requires Java Runtime Environment 5 for it to work CORRECTLY. Quote

umm...

wouldn't JRE preclude running on Windows 3.1?

Also, this is similar to the popup menu one can get by right-clicking the taskbar, and selecting new, Toolbar, and selecting a root. (my computer, for example).

Oh, wise guy!  nyuk, nyuk, nyuk...

I'm gonna have to try that new, toolbar, root thing when I get home...if I can remember!   It's not quite as versatile, and it would REQUIRE pressing the chevron rather then a identifiable icon. But you can do some neat stuff if you are willing to enlarge your taskbar, like have the bottom half show the folders/files in one of your directories.

Solve : $300-600 entry level speakers for computer and/or TV usage?

Answer»

Budget: $300-$600
Purpose: Enhancing the listening experience with my laptop in my basement. I am willing to spend more if it isn't too difficult or expensive to switch usage between my laptop and TV.

These will be my first speakers, unfortunately purchased online. I want a better experience listening to music and/or the TV because I'm tired of listening to my subpar laptop and TV speakers. The main goal is to improve the sound of my laptop, but I've read that there are methods to connect speakers to a TV as well. Again, if this is not too difficult or expensive, I am willing to spend more. I do not have a preference between wired/wireless, or between BOOKSHELF /floorstanding speakers, or active/passive as long as the ENTIRE purchase fits within the budget. Should I look for an amplifier first and speakers that go with it, or pick out speakers first and look for an amplifier that goes well with them? What speakers and amplifier are recommended in a $600 budget? Are there any brands or products I should avoid? Thanks.I have received many suggestions from others and am attempting to investigate them all. The more I learn, the more confusing and difficult the decision becomes. I have also received reccomendations for a Bluetooth soundbar. Unfortunately, due to the bizarre, idiotic design of my TV stand I am limited to a soundbar smaller than 32". For better or worse I'm open-minded and so I'm interested not only in soundbars but also bookshelf speakers and tower speakers, with or without a SUBWOOFER. To make matters worse, I don't know anything about choosing an amplifier for speakers, which is why I'm partial to powered speakers. Of course, because the subwoofer can be added later I am willing to go without ONE for now if I find a particularly encouraging set-up.

I should have mentioned EARLIER, the primary usage will be listening to music with my laptop. The ability to use the speakers with my LG OLED 65B7A is a welcome bonus, but not a deal-breaker. In other words, if I can't use the speakers with my TV, it's not a problem. Of course, if there's an adapter to use the speakers with my TV, that is also a welcome idea.

Solve : The Brute Force Uninstaller?

Answer» HERE

The Brute Force Uninstaller (BFU) is a program to help forcibly remove unwanted software and the likes from a system. It´s basically a scripting engine that can execute commands from a file, much like a BATCH file. The list of commands is very complete and powerful, and scripts are easy to write.

I use Total Uninstall...
It's never failed me.Not free, though...I like freebies...HELP the link you posted is dead unfortunately

I used your uninstaller to remove a old antivirus software but it says to stop the SERVICE first. when I want to stop the service I see its not running! installer/uninstaller might be corrupted

when I go in appwiz via uninstall button it closes instantly

Anyone have a working link to get rid of this???

Curious why not back up the data to external media or cloud storage and perform a clean install?

RIPPING software out of WINDOWS usually leaves orphan entries in registry and elsewhere and makes for a system that is scarred from its removal.

Which Antivirus and version are you trying to remove and from what OS version? Some antivirus programs have protections from being REMOVED without uninstalling the proper way. Some require a password to uninstall. And some have their own un-installers...

Solve : Soundcore Life Q30 Headphones?

Answer»
I have never been compelled to brag about a headphone purchase but this is a quality pair of headphones for a reasonable price ($79.99). Also I feel like my research effort actually paid off!

There is also a pair of Soundcore Life Q20's but those are clunky and heavy. The Q30's are the answer to complaints from the Q20's.

My personal highlights:

Every pair of over ear headphones I have bought have CLAIMED to be "noise cancelling" and I now know that is a highly abused marketing term. After wearing these for the first TIME I realized that the little fan in my room that I thought made ALMOST no noise actually makes a lot of noise because when I took them off and came out of the isolated sound environment the little fan sounded like a car engine running.

'Transparency Mode' is amazing. Just touch your fingers to the right ear cup and it will turn off noise cancelling. Great for when someone starts talking to you.

I have been probably 30 to 35 feet away from my computer and their was no loss of CONNECTIVITY, static, popping, etc.

USB-C charging and it is super fast compared to my old Mini USB charging headphones.

The app lets you chose from multiple levels of noise cancelling and keeps the firmware up to date.

Great sound from my computer, tablet and phone.

  • Lighter Build and More Comfortable Fit
  • Customizable EQ with Soundcore App

Side note. I stumbled on some headphone ear cup covers at Amazon a while back and now they are a must have addition. They add a little more cushion and help protect the foam material from degrading. They also have various types of headband covers. Nice to "see" you man Thanks, you too. I still pop in and out now and then. Just don't have much to say these days.

Solve : 1-abc.net Folder-To-TXT?

Answer» HERE

Do you know this situation? You just burned a disk, you collected some data on a USB stick or you simply organized some FILES on your local hard drive. Now you want to get an editable list of all files in this directory including sub-folders but Windows offers nothing for you. No possibility to print it, no way to get it to your clipboard. 1-abc.net Folder-To-TXT closes this feature lack with an easy-to-use function to export all file names to a *.txt file with just 3 clicks. And the best: this tool is absolutely free to use. If you want to use it longer than 10 days you only have to register also for free of course.

Feature Overview: Easy-to-use interface, save all file names in a specific folder, save all file names in a specific folder including sub-folders, show full paths, file names with extension or file names without extension in the list, program can be installed on USB sticks, floppy disks or nearly all other re-writable media and very low system resources. This version is the first release on CNET Download.com.

Solve : Shadow Explorer?

This program is a front end to the Shadow Copy feature that is enabled in all Vista versions but only 'accessible' in the Business, Enterprise and Ultimate versions.

Shadow Explorer will allow access to the FILES that are backed up with each System Restore point to Home and Basic users.

Pretty new but seems to work WELL already. Painless backup for Vista users!

As far as I know, only works with Vista.

So Vista keeps your files if you delete them? Intriguing.
Yep. Files only for Home and Basic - no programs.

It's my understanding that Vista, all versions, MAKE incremental file backups, Shadow Copies, from time to time. I think that Home and Basic versions just do the 'Shadow Copy' when it sets a Restore Point, which is at least daily - the other versions may do it more often.

Shadow Explorer, the referenced program, provides a front end to obtain the data that's already there but M$ didn't provide access to on Basic and Home - I guess that the safety of my data isn't IMPORTANT to M$!

This is not a replacement for a proper backup strategy, mainly because the data is on the system drive, but will certainly help when you accidentally overwrite a file.

Solve : Firefox add-on - TestGen4Web?

Answer»

This is pretty cool add-on...

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/1385

Just LIKE your VCR - for Firefox. It records what you do, stores it, and plays it back on demand.
This records the user action on the page, form fills, etc, and can save the recording to a file, replay it back for you on demand.

Combined with translators, which can convert this recording to automated command line test tools, you can generate HTTPUnit, PHP-SimpleTest scripts.

Like a screen RECORDER?Kind of, but in text version. Look at the screenshot.
Let say, you want to give someone some instructions.
Instead of saying, go here, click on this, SWITCH to that web page, type in something in a box, click OK, etc., etc., you just click "Record" button, and start DOING those things yourself. When you're done, click "Stop" button, and the add-on will display, in text, step-by-step, what you were doing.
Try it, and you'll see for yourself.
Fun.

Recently, a significant threat to DNS, the system that translates names you can remember (such as www.doxpara.com) to numbers the INTERNET can route (66.240.226.139) was discovered, that would allow malicious people to impersonate almost any website on the Internet. Software companies across the industry have quietly collaborated to simultaneously release fixes for all affected name servers.

DNSstuff Freeware Detects Vulnerable DNS Servers

DNSstuff.com is offering a FREE tool for organizations looking to test the susceptibility of their domain name servers to a fundamental flaw in the Domain Name System protocol revealed PUBLICLY last week.

A provider of on-demand DNS and network analysis tools, DNSstuff made the freeware, which company officials have dubbed DNS VULNERABILITY Check, available on its site Wednesday. The tool is meant to test for the vulnerability reported by Dan Kaminsky, director of penetration testing for IOActive.

The researcher reportedly uncovered a flaw in the DNS protocol that can be exploited to poison DNS server caches and re-direct Internet traffic. While he has publicly kept details of the vulnerability close to his vest, several vendors coordinated the release of a patch in response. In the case of DNSstuff, company officials decided to offer a free tool that checks to see if DNS queries from a user’s server are coming from the same source port.

This editor and complier let you build your own programs, Just BASIC supports RS-232 communication, bmp animation and bmp graphics, textboxes, texteditors, file menus, BUTTONS, joystick, keyboard, and mouse support, and much more, and its easy for beginning PROGRAMMERS to learn basic. I have made many programs using just basic and it has HELPED me learn how to code in VB, and no this isnt an advertisment, but it is a recommendation for beginning programmersSeriously you guys should try this.  Thx for the link - I am downloading that and hope to play with it.

Despite being a pretty old fella I went back to university in 1992 (age 47!!!) - and used Basic for some of my ENGINEERING presentations.  For certain mechanics oriented stuff it did a good job even tho running in DOS - and just maybe I can remember some of it!  Even before that it was something fun to play with far back as I remember.

I do remember too that making good use of ''go subs'' enabled me to do some light coding for some quite complex recursive routines - particularly with graphics. QUOTE from: ChrisXPPro on July 16, 2008, 08:24:29 PM

Solve : Change The Size Of Vista’s Blinking Cursor?

Answer» http://www.lockergnome.com/windows/2008/07/11/change-the-size-of-vistas-blinking-cursor/

Locating the blinking cursor in Vista can be hard given that it is so thin. If you find that you often have difficulty SEEING the cursor because of its size, you can easily make the cursor thicker.

To increase the THICKNESS of the blinking cursor in Vista:

   1. Open the Control Panel.
   2. Click Ease of Access.
   3. Select Optimize visual display.
   4. Scroll to the BOTTOM of the window screen to the section labelled “Make things on the screen easier to see”.
   5. In the box NEXT to “Set the thickness of the blinking cursor,” select a number. The larger the number, the thicker the cursor.
   6. Click Save.
I just changed it from 1 to 3, but I see no difference. Maybe restart is needed, but I have no time, now.Broni exactly how SMALL is the cursor?Hmmm...look at yours...probably the same...LOL
