Solve : Dual screen?

Answer»

I am running Windows XP. I had a spare screen laying around so I thought I might try dualscreen. I've plugged both into my NVIDIA GeForce 7800GTX but only the one screen (the one I had before) works. All the guides I have read just say something will appear in Display properties>Settings. Do I have to update my drivers or something?I'm not expert in this field but can't you choose the dual screen settings when you Right Click the Desktop, go to Properties and hit the Settings tab? That's all I get when I go there.
http://img139.imageshack.us/img139/7840/nosecondchoiceuy7.pngYes, Right Click the Desktop, go to Properties and hit the Settings tab.  There, you should see two monitors graphically REPRESENTED; they will be numbered 1 and 2.  Click on 2.  Then, check the box near the bottom of the panel; it's labeled "Extend my Windows desktop onto this monitor".  Click Apply and OK.

If the your need to graphical representation in the Display Properties panel shows monitor 2 to the right of monitor 1 but your physical positioning of the monitors is the opposite, just drag monitor 2 to the LEFT of monitor 1 in the Display Properties panel.Tell us more about the monitors and video card.  Does the card have one VGA/D-Sub and one DVI port?  What type of monitor is your primary monitor?  Is it CRT or LCD?  Does it connect via VGA or DVI?  Which port is it connected to?  What type of monitor is your secondary monitor?

Did you have your computer turned off when you connected the second monitor?  If not, have you restarted your computer SINCE you connected the monitor?

Are you absolutely sure that second monitor works?

Here's what you should see in Display Properties:

Okay everything seems to be working okay now. One last thing: Is there anyway to make the desktop background on the other screen fill the whole page without changing my current resolution? At the moment it has a large blue border it.What were you expecting to see on the second screen?  Windows taskbar will remain on the primary monitor unless you MOVE it to the second monitor.  If you want a taskbar on each monitor, you'll need to get software such as UltraMon.

Yes, you can have the same background on both monitors.  I have my two monitors set at the same resolution, but I believe that will work, even with the monitors set at different resolutions.  You can also have separate backgrounds on the monitors.

... all I see is the desktop background with a blue border around
The width of that blue border will probably vary, depending on what resolution setting you use.  You may also need to use the buttons on the monitor to adjust the screen.

Your nVidia software provides some features for multiple monitors which can be enabled by opening nVidia nView Desktop Manager, from Windows Control Panel.  I have a few of those features enabled.  One of them is a BUTTON on any application title bar which, if clicked on, quickly moves that application's window from one monitor to the other.  I'll post a screen shot when I get back to my desktop machine; I'm on a laptop right now. I see you edited your post after I first read it and posted my previous reply.  Again, use the control buttons on the monitor to adjust screen so the full screen is used for your resolution setting. Thanks for the great help Soyabean, everything works now, I might have to try and find a free alternative to ultrmon though. I don't use UltraMon; I mentioned it as an option.

Windows will let you drag program windows from monitor to another.  To do this, the screen can not be maximized.

I have some of the NVIDIA features for multiple monitors enabled.  Here's a screen print:

The button where I noted it will move a window from one monitor to the other will do so even in maximized mode.  As previously mentioned, these features can be enabled from NVIDIA nView Desktop Manager, which is accessed from Windows Control Panel.

Thanks again SoyBean, I'll enable those.
