Solve : ethernet trouble?

Answer»

I have just bought i new computer and when i hook it up to the internet using the ethernet cable it say it has a connection but wont open ie or any other programme that requires the internet. When i install BT Boardband i get to the end of intalation and it says it cannot detect the router. I find this strange as when i take the pc down stairs and try it with the usb(usb cable is not long enough to go upstairs) it works ok and now i am using the ethernet cable with my old pc and it WORK fine but not with my new one. Any way i can make the ethernet work on my new one?

Its Windows xp sp2Configure the PC and router according to the PROVIDERS wishes. Don't use the software, it is more OFTEN annoying than it is useful.

Besides, be glad it doesn't open IE. Get Firefox ASAP. well it cant be the router as it is fine with my other computer so it must be the pc, what do ineed to change on it ?EITHER to accept DHCP (Obtain an IP address automatically) or fill out an IP address as specified by the network administrator.. Which is probably you. Both has to be done under Windows TCP/IP configuration. What kind of router do you have? Model?
You say that "downstairs" you have ANOTHER computer connected to the router, to the usb port. You want to use 2 computers at the same time? One connected to usb and one connected at ethernet port (lan port)?
