Solve : Finding personal info through IP?

Answer»

Hey there everyone,

is there any way someone can FIND out your personal information such as your name, address, phone number, etc etc. if they know your IP address? I'm pretty sure you can find an address with an IP but you will need a very expensive program. The amount of info you can extract from the average IP is actually rather LIMITED. You can usually get a country of origin, the ISP who owns it and sometimes you can narrow it down to a specific city or region (and it only shows the city/region where the ISP's server is located that isn't necessarily where you live).
Only your ISP should be holding the information that ties your name and address to a specific IP.

If you got a domain name registered it's a whole different story though. But that only applies if you own and run your own domain.

Btw. you can check out the information AVAILABLE yourself.
Go to this site and get your IP.
http://myip.dk/

Then go here
http://www.dnsstuff.com/
And find the box called IP Information. (Scroll down a bit).
Enter your IP and Lookup. This site can be fun to play with:

I see that you must either join a fee-based service for $3/mo. or you can register at no cost and get a limited number of lookups.Quote from: WillyW on August 18, 2007, 01:03:17 PM

You don't have to sign up to do a few lookups.Usually, about the best you can get from an IP is your ISP's address. A search for my IP will almost always bring up Reston, Virginia. I don't live near Virginia, nor have I ever even been there. The closest the admin here has been able to get to tracing me is MOUNTAIN View, which is still a few hours away from where I actually live.Quote from: Carbon Dudeoxide on August 18, 2007, 09:24:49 PM

Interesting.
Any ideas as to why?

Hmmm, on my Win XP Pro SP2 comp using Firefox, I get this when I enter my IP address in the IP Information box and click on Lookup. I can't go beyond that screen unless I click on Join Now or Login, which I can't do because I have not registered.

But, on ANOTHER computer (notebook w/Vista and using IE7), I could get lookups, just as you said.
