Solve : First time wireless router setup?

I inheirited my daughter's 4yr old Dell laptop. She had wireless setup at college, no problems. I have att.net set up on my desktop. I bought a Lynksys N router and followed the software instructions. All E CABLES are hooked up CORRECTLY. It gives a E cable not hooked up properly error mess.  ALSO, I TRIED hooking up the LAND E cable to the laptp and it would not let me access the net that way either.
My desk top works fine on the land E cable and router.
Do I have to enable or disable something on the LT to clear this error?Exactly what model is that router?  Have you read the documentation on it?
