Solve : gateway 4530gz no wifi?

Answer»

Hi I was hoping that someone could tell me how to active the wifi on a gateway 4530gz.  I have looked for a button but no button found.  I have a wireless modem from quest but it doesn't show up in wireless networks.  Anybody want to give me a hand...........thanks.....two-dogs    Quote

FN+F2 keyboard combination turns wireless Ethernet on and off.
Antenna: Uses factory-installed diversified internal antenna
    Operating channels: 11 selectable channels
Security: 128 and 64 bit WEP encryption
Operating Frequency: 2.4 GHz Direct Sequence Spread Spectrum (IEEE 802.11b and IEEE 802.11g)
    Maximum Data Rate
    54 Mbps (IEEE802.11g)
    11 Mbps (IEEE802.11b)
From Gateway site.I have attempted FN+F2 at the same time and nothing happened, I also tried FN then F2 with no change, still no networks found in range,  Also network ADAPTER is intel pro wireless 220bg network connecter anything else that I could try?FN+F2 is a toggle for the radio. A light should come on when you hit FN and F2 at the same time.
In addition, the Network software must be installed and the device has to be enabled.
Which gives rise to some questions.
Did you get she unit used?
When did it stop working?
Was the unit drooped or damaged?
Can it work using Ethernet?
Have you tried a USB wireless device?
Do other computers find wireless networks in your office?
Ok this is not my computer it is a buddy of mine and we are trying to hook up to the wifi in a rv park.  I tried to hook up my computer to the network (my computer to his computer) but it is not seeing it in the network.  Funny THING is it doesn't see any other networks in the park and mine does.  I am running windows 7 on my computer and he is running xp.  It will hook up with a either net to my modem but not wireless and my modem is a wireless modem.  Any thing else I can tell you let me know......thanks...........two-dogs
Ok I see what you meant by Fn it is a key right next to ctrl I hit that and the F2 key with no results.  I also have an error when it starts up and says "Generic host process for win32 services has encountered a problem and needs to close.  We are sorry for the inconvenience.  And boy this thing runs slow, so slow that I have to reboot it to do any thing.  WELL I hit the 2 keys again and now it keeps rebooting had to start in safe mode.......this sucks been working on this all day..........two-dogs   Sounds like Windows needs to be reinstalled first of all.

Anyhow, if you can get it to work you should check that A) the drivers for the WLAN NIC are installed and B) the WLAN is enabled in the BIOS.Only thing I found in the bios was under advanced was Wireless power setting and I changed it to on.  Where in the bios is it located I will try and update the drivers.  Why is it when I hit the Fn with f2 key then I get the blue screen of death and get a loop and keeps rebooting on its own.   Ok I tried to update the driver and got svchost .exe application error so whats up with that..........two-dogs    Quote

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/821690Well I found out that his wifi adapter is bad, and every time time I activated the wifi that is when it looped.  I also found out that he has a lot of corrupted files, because I am now trying to install MSE and it gets half way through the install and then stops no errors just stops.  Is there a program that will fix corrupted dll's or load new ones.  And before you ASK there is no windows disk so I will have to do it manually.........thanks...........two-dogs    Quote from: two-dogs on February 27, 2012, 08:16:30 PM

Doing a repair on one to two bad files may be doable. But the chance of fixing lots of bad files is not so good.

Is there a directory named i386 on the drive? Forget that.
Does the thing have a recovery partition? It should.

Restore System to Factory Default

Does he have backups of his personal stuff?
He may need to order a recovery CD from Gateway.
No, no backups or recovery, also could not get it to do a restore, all points failed.  I did however did git it to update it took 21 updates I don't think he has ever updated it.  He can still use it to surf the web and get his emails, and if it is updating most of his files are ok.  He will as you said have to get a restore disk if he wants it to work faster.............thanks for your help and if you can think of anything else drop me a line............two-dogs   The link above, "Restore System to Factory Default", is not about restore points. Did you read it?Well now I have done it, I was running dail-a-fix and know it won't even boot up.  Now I get the system32\ntoskrnl.exe, now I will have to repair windows.  I have been trying to make a boot disk but not having much luck, so now I just created another problem, so much for fixing s__t............two-dogs
