Solve : Gateway 5200s doesn't recognize ethernet controller upon HD reformatting?

Answer»

Working on a Gateway desktop. Had to fdisk the harddrive. All drivers that I downloaded from their website worked except for the Broadcomm ethernet controller. Confirmed w internet provider that there was a signal. Checked device manager. STILL getting a flag for the ethernet controller. Does anyone know of a compatible/generic one? Checked several sites & received the same results - use Broadcomm. Using the same OS as previously, installed XP Pro SP2. Help. Is the Broadcomm network adapter built-in to the motherboard or a separate card?

Did Gateway offer any download for the motherboard "chipset"?

Did you install from a Gateway OEM or Microsoft Retail Windows XP Install CD? Broadcom/ethernet adapter is connected to the motherboard.

Gateway did supply a chipset & upgrades to bios. Installed all files supplied by the website.

Used a legit XP pro sp 2 CD.

Would the order of driver installations effect it? Can't remember if I did the chipset first. About 15 files were supplied.

Took out the battery before any driver installations.

Is it possible that section of the motherboard is bad?

Should I test out a pci ethernet card & see if that works.

Suggestions?

P.S. Thanks for a reply. Best place to find out what you may overlook.

1. Motherboard Drivers. Install the motherboard "chipset" drivers first, reboot, then install drivers for the other built-in devices. How to install your motherboard chipset drivers

2. Network Adapter. Yes, it's possible for a built-in (onboard) device to fail. If you can borrow a PCI network adaptor for test purposes, fine. I'd wait a few hours before "buying" one, however. The corpse of the built-in one isn't even cold yet! Why do you think the built-in one isn't working properly? Did it ever work properly?

What kind of "flag" is on the ethernet controller (network adaptor?) within Device Manager; yellow exclamation point, blue I, or red X?

Within Device Manager right-click the flagged ethernet controller (network adaptor?), select "Properties", select "General" tab. What message and/or error code appears in the "Device status" subsection of the tab display?
PLEASE pardon the delay in response. Had family emergency. I downloaded the CPU ID software. I updated the bios & matched up the proper chipset. Still..no dice. I got a PCI Ethernet card for 20$ & popped it in. No problems.P.S. Thanks for all your help.Did you install the chipset driver before any other drivers?Yep. That's the first thing I did. Normally don't have errors when I do this. That's why this situation was weird. All other devices were detected & updated with no issues..except this one.Quote from: zenrush on October 06, 2009, 10:24:51 PM
