Solve : HDD Questions? |
|
Answer» Hello, I have two questions. The first is: Is IDE and ATA the same type of HDD?They don't describe hdd types. IDE stands for integrated development environment. IDE (Integrated Drive Electronics) is a standard electronic interface used between a computer motherboard's data paths or bus and the computer's DISK storage devices. The IDE interface is based on the IBM PC Industry Standard Architecture (ISA) 16-bit bus standard, but it is also used in computers that use other bus standards. Most computers sold today use an enhanced version of IDE called Enhanced Integrated Drive Electronics (EIDE). In today's computers, the IDE controller is often built into the motherboard. IDE was adopted as a standard by American National Standards Institute (ANSI) in November, 1990. The ANSI name for IDE is Advanced Technology Attachment (ATA). The IDE (ATA) standard is one of several related standards maintained by the T10 Committee. ATA (AT Attachment) is the primary standard for connecting storage to PC's. ATA replaced earlier technologies such as MFM, RLL, and ESDI. ATA currently competes with SCSI. ATA is a specification for attaching hard drives to the AT bus. The AT specification has been extended to include other storage, such as CD/DVD drives, TAPE drives, and Zip drives with the Advanced Technology Attachment Packet Interface (ATAPI) additions to the specification. ATA is also known as IDE (Integrated Drive Electronics). Quote And does SATA work with every motherboard? Yeeessss and nooooo. Sata drives require SATA connections on the mobo or the installation of a PCI card to CONNECT them, although one can BUY IDE to SATA adapters which will allow SATA drives to be used on IDE connectors. The benefits of the faster SATA drives will be lost when using IDE/SATA adapters. |
