Solve : help me!!! my laptop cannot connect to the internet!!?

Answer»

im having trouble connecting my laptop to the net via the ethernet cable....i have tried everything!! my network adapter is functioning fine and i have brought a new ethernet cable...i am only getting wireless....i am at my wits end!!!!
somebody help!!What are you connecting it to?
A network, or an Internet Connection?

Who is your ISP? How do you connect to ISP (Internet Service Provider) equipment? Do you connect to a router? A wireless router? Do you connect to a friend's equipment? Do you have network equipment in your home?

im connecting it via a modem and ethernet cable. i have my isp address but i cant connect to the net....it keeps on saying 'unsucessful'......could there be a fault with the network cable thats attached to the modem??I'm having the same problem and have tried vertually everything. My dial up doesnt work either saying that it cant find the server.
Which according to microsoft is due to CERTIFICATE issues in the registry which i dont want to touch for fear of messing it up further. Quote from: Jay07 on May 15, 2007, 04:37:30 PM

You say you're getting wireless?? Is it your own wireless network, or someone else's?

Anyways, are there any errors (X, ! or ?'s) in device manager (control panel, system, hardware)?

Are the IP's/DNS set to be obtained automatically? (Network connections, Right click on the network you're having problems with, properties, scroll box TCP/IP, click, properties box)

Is the cable plugged in the correct socket on the modem, and on your computer?

And who is the ISP?Quote from: honeyrose on May 15, 2007, 08:12:20 AM

I don't understand the part "i am only getting wireless". So... What are your network equipments? A modem, connected through ethernet cable to your provider's equipment? Your computer is connected directly to modem (through cable, wireless?) or do you have a switch/router and you connect through it?

I am trying to guess what are you using and how are you using that. Also, your Internet Service Provider gave you some advices about how to connect a computer/network to his equipment?

I do not want to overwhelm you with the informations I ask; just try to tell us as much as you are aware of and I will try to find a sollution or to direct you to find a solution.

Do you have your isp address? Are you talking about tcp/ip properties?
Another question: if you ask your provider for some help, they will charge your bill? It will be easier for you to solve the problem if they will help you a little.

Please post here the full error message that you receive when you try to browse the internet.

i keep on getting a 169 ip address!! something wrong with the hardware i think!! wireless is already INSTALLED with the laptop !! im really starting to hate MODERN technology! im trying to connect via modem, which has a white cable running through it and the ethernet cable is attached to my laptop...but it keeps on saying 'unidentified network. access: limited connectivity!! *facepalm* its like living in the dark ages If it's a cable between the modem and your laptop then you are not using wireless technology to connect to internet.
And that 169 ip address says that your cable or network adapter might be faulty, your laptop cannot comunicate with the modem (what model of modem?). Or maybe you changed the network interface card (NIC) and your modem does not recognize the "new" NIC as being legitimate. In this case it's better to phone your isp to UPDATE your data. They will PROBABLY need the new MAC address of the network card (they could ask you the MAC address of your laptop, it means the same thing, but the MAC really belongs to NIC).

Your modem has a few leds on it. Does it show it has connection?

Another problem, which I didn't think about: what is your NIC MAC address? (MAC address is also called physical address). If it is something like FF-FF-FF-FF-FF-FF and you did not set it up so, then your NIC is surely faulty. Instead of FFs you have to have something much more "random", all the groups should not be the same.yeah, thanks mate. i thought that it might be the network adapter. im taking it to the computer shop to get it checked out!!! after that im not going anywhere near technology.................i seem to set them off.

thanks for your help!!
