Answer» I am using window xp on both the old and new comp. The router is a Linksys. On the old comp it is connected to the ethernet CARD in thr pci slot. The other end is connected to the new comp . On the sys tray is is saying that "a network cable is unplugged, Local area connection 2" I have gone over and over the connections and cant find a cable unplugged Here is a pic. This is just the 1st problem. The computers r NOT communicating with each other nor can i get the old comp to share my dsl. I have sp 2 on both. and tcp and ip is on automatic on both comps.
[cleaning up - attachment deleted by admin]hello Echo Echo Echo lol,
On reading your post I am not sure of your connection configuration. Let me know if this is how you have it set up. The dsl comes in to the house and goes to the router in the internet port. Then one cable goes to each computer to connect to the ethernet port. If this is correct then you shouldnt have any problem connecting to the ethernet from either computer. If not then I will need more detail as to the model of the router and how you have it configured. For local file and PRINTER sharing then there are a few more steps to take. first you have to turn on file and printer sharing. this is accomplished by right clicking on the local area connection and placing a check mark in front of the file sharing line. second you will need to set up a workgroup for your home network. to do this right click on the my computer icon and select the properties then select the computer name tab. click the change button on the page , make sure that you have a name in the computer name and add a name to the workgroup name other than MSHOME like ECHOHOUSE . Click ok then allow your computer to restart. follow the same procedures on the other computer. Once both computers are restarted then open my computer and right click on the drive or folder that you want to share and select sharing and security. select a name for your share or leave the default there and click apply. you will need to use this procedure on both computer if you want to have access to both computers from either computer. to share a printer then open the control panel and click on printers right click on the printer that you want to share and then select sharing and security. select a name for your share or leave the default there and click apply. you should now be able to access the information from either computer by clicking on my network places. HOPE you are able to use this information

Ok so I stopped into your forum started reading some threads because I was bored. I found a question that I could help with so I took the time to sign up for the forum and answer the question. I do plan to visit and contribute if that is permissable. If it is not then please rewrite my answer to echo and then remove my answer and my account from this forum.
Have a nice day Robert Donlon http://www.ccsav.com
Ain't no big deal, Robert. You're welcome to come back any time. Recently there has been some controversy about displaying links in signatures that are are of commercial nature. You can set it up in your profile so that it displays and icon under your name. Welcome aboard.ok..well 1st problem is solved. Which is the above stated problem. Turns out that 1 of the wires was bad. So i went to the store and bought a new 1. As soon as i turned on both computers i got a notice saying something like 1 computer "saw the other" and visa versa. Now both computer can get onto the internet at the same time. I went ahead and opened "my computer" and told both computers to share the "c" drive. What do i do now? I want to be able to access the other older computer and bring files and pictures over into the newer 1? Where do i go to "see" the other computers drive? I went to "control panel" "network and internet connections" then "network connections" once there i went over to the menu on the left and hit "My network places" and the page is blank..nothing is there. So...where do i go? Im sorry to bother yall with basic stuff.. Disregard the above for now i have encounterded a problem on the old computer. When i go to "my computer" and click on Share and then "apply i immediately get "internet explorer has encountered a problem" message. I tried it 5 times and 5 times i get the same thing. The new compter shared with no problem. Any ideas?
