Solve : Help with Wireless Internet Connection?

Answer»

Okay, so this might be  kinda LONG but hopefully I will give enought information for someone to help. Please help! My computer was full of VIRUSES and spyware. Long story short, ended up having a techie friend up back up my files on an external hard drive, wipe the dang thing, and reinstall windows. Ever since, I can't get my wireless internet working. As of now I am connected via ethernet cable. I have a Dell Laptop and my wireless router/modem is a 2wire Gateway model# 2701HG-B. The device manager says my LAN card is working properly. I had to reset Windows to manage networks. Now in the Wireless Network CONNECTION window it just says "No wireless networks found in range." On the router, all the lights are green except for the wireless one which is not lit up at all. I don't imaging this is a problem with the 2wire because it was working just fine before the virus issue with the laptop. My laptop is my only computer so no way to test another computer with it. When I go to Control Panel>Network Connections, the Wireless Network Connection's status is "Not Connected, Firewalled." I even tried unplugging the router and disconnecting everything else, then plugging it all back in and turning the computer back on.....and got the same thing. I'm so frustrated! What can I do?I am no expert but have you tried resetting your router?Yes, that was one of the first things I tried. The lights blinked off, then it went through a self test. The lights all came back on to green except the wireless light. (grrr...)Laptop or Desktop?

If it's a laptop there should be a switch somewhere on the unit that you will have to make sure is turned on.  Then open your network places and manage network connections and make sure the wireless card is enabled.

If it's a desktop then you should have both a wired and wireless indication in the network connection window.  You will need to disable the wired to get the routing to work on the wireless card has been my experience.

Before you go through all that though, with the wired link up and able to access the internet, open the command prompt.  type in:  ipconfig /all and not the GATEWAY address.

Open IE and type in just the numbers:  ie....   192.168.0.254 for instance and press enter.  This should bring up a username and password prompt or take you to the routers settings page.  Once there you will need to find and enable the wireless network, setting the SSID and passphrase as previously done.  If you don't know how contact your isp or whomever installed the DSL/CABLE for you.  They will usually walk you through the setup process.  Once it's rebooted you should be able to detect the wireless network.  Make sure you have the passphrase written down before you exit the router settings.  You will need that to connect.  Once you have the connection going.  Then suggest you disable the SSID broadcast wich is a unchecked box in the router settings.  And reboot again.
Yes, it is a laptop but there is no switch. It's automatic. The wireless card is enabled and working properly according to the device manager. I've ACTUALLY already done all that with command prompt. By going to http://gateway.2wire.net I get directly to my router's settings page. I've gone back through the setup and all that information is still there. I didn't have to re-enter anything. I'm going to reboot again. Maybe I did something different this time around......I'm at a loss..... Quote from: tiffy09 on April 14, 2009, 06:24:33 PM

So busy I FORGOT to recheck this.  Hope it's all working now.  If not repost and I'll monitor it over the weekend and will try something else.
