Solve : How can I create a VPN connection to my home??

Answer»

I would like to create a VPN tunnel to my home network. I have tried to use the connection wizard that comes with window but I keep getting error 800. I am assuming this is because I have an overlapping dynamic IP not a static IP. Please correct me if I am wrong. I am wondering if any third party software can help me with this problem. I have checked my router setting for VPN and it is set to allow any incoming connection. I can provide more info if needed.

ThanksI took some time read a previous post about a program called Hamachi. Any tips for using this, or is ti pretty self explanatory. Install it and let er rip?
Hamachi is a pretty good tool for creating personal VPN's. The use of it is pretty self explanatory. Install it, create a group, and connect all machines to it.

My personal preference for VPN's, though, is using SSH. It allows you to forward ports through the tunnel, as well as give you access to all resources LOCATED on your home network.

For instance: "ssh [emailprotected] -L 8080:myip.com:80" would forward my local port 8080 over the SSH tunnel to the server on port 80. Or, you can use "ssh [emailprotected] -D 8080 myip.com" would create a SOCKS proxy on local port 8080 that tunnels over SSH to my home network.

Another way to do it is to take advantage of the PPTP or IPSec VPN options in your router. Some support it OTHERS don't.

Yet another option is to create your own OpenVPN server and use that.

Many ways to GO about this, just depends on what exactly you're trying to do.I installed the program on three computers. I can only seem to access the shared folders on the nodes. I have a windows 2008 virtual server on my network that is pretty much fully operational. I am still working as a workgroup and do not use active directory yet, I am still trying to familiarize myself with those tools. I dont know what my options are using that for a VPN server.

I have not been able to take full control of any computer yet. Actually I got back to work to find that in cannot ping or access anything. This EXPLAINS how to setup an OpenSSH server on a Windows machine. In order to access it from outside your LAN you'll have to forward the port specified by the servers configuration to that servers IP (default 22).
