Answer» I have an e-systems computer with windows xp home edition operating system. I recently tried to get the internet with virgin media. They sent me a modem and I installed it fine(I know this as it works fine with the laptop).
The PROBLEM I am having with my desktop computer is that I cannot connect to the internet. The problem seems to be highlighted by a "169" ip address(according to virgin tech support),
I called a pc technical support LINE and they told me it was either a faulty NETWORK card or a problem with windows. I had a new network card installed but I still cannot connect to the internet.
I need to know how to find the problem first of all before I can attempt to fix it.

Turn off computer. Disconnect modem fro power source. Wait 1 minute. Power up modem. Restart computer. Try to connect.thanks for the reply Broni.
I did exactly as you suggested it said:-
Windows IP configuration
An error occured while renewing interface local area connection 2: Unable to contact your DCHP server. Request has timed out.
but still nothing. I did the ipconfig thing again when I restarted the computer, still says exactly the same thing as I posted above.
I do appreciate all the help, thanks very much.
Any other suggestions?
Try winsockxpfix: http://www.snapfiles.com/get/winsockxpfix.html and lspfix: http://www.cexx.org/lspfix.htm One at a time. Restart computer after each fix.Do you have a router? To which you connect the laptop and the desktop?
Maybe the modem "learn" the MAC address of the laptop, and when you connect the desktop you have to restart (keep it stopped for a few seconds) the modem, to "relearn" the "new" MAC address (of the computer). When you will connect again the laptop, you will have to restart the modem (if this is the issue).
