Solve : How can I link another computer directly to mine to transfer files.? |
|
Answer» I have an old computer with some very important files that I need. The old computer does not have cd burner, it only has a floppy drive and cd rom, my new computer does not have floppy drive but a cd rom and dvd burner. I was THINKING I could somehow link the old computer to my new one through a network cable via their network cable ports. When I did that I only saw my network not the old computer. Is there ANOTHER WAY to link these two computers together.Do you wish to connect the two computers directly to each other or are they going to be connected via a hub/switch/router/etc? I was thinking I could somehow link the old computer to my new one through a network cable via their network cable ports. When I did that I only saw my network not the old computer. Is there another way to link these two computers together. 1. Another common method of transferring "files" is to use a USB Flash Drive. Your ability to do this would depend UPON how "old' the computer is and what operating system it is running. Most computers still in use support these devices. If the operating system is Windows 98/98SE, you would have to ensure there are downloadable drivers available for whatever flash drive you might use. The packaging for flash drive or manufacturer's web site should say. There are also some DOS drivers available but that's a little more difficult to setup (I've never done it). If the operating system is Windows ME or newer (Windows 2000, Windows XP, Windows Vista); the operating system provides generic drivers that should work. 2. That said, your best option is to connect the two computers together using an ethernet cable. Use "crossover" cable if direct from one computer to the other. Use "straight" cable if connecting computers via hub/switch/router. 3. See the following article "You cannot access shared files and folders or browse computers in the workgroup with Windows XP": http://support.microsoft.com/kb/318030 4. The following Microsoft documents may be helpful (or give you a headache). The "Truth" is out there. Don't give up. a. Are you sure about that you used a crossover cable to connect the PCs? If you are sure about that then, do this following in both PCs Right click on My network Place ---->Properties ------>Right Click on Local Area Connection---->Select the Tickmark for Client for Microsoft networks, File and Printer Sharing for MS network, and Internet protocol (TCP/IP) (Under General Tab) ---->Then Select Internet protocol (TCP/IP)---->Click Properties----> In The Old PC- Tick use the following IP Address IP Address: 10.0.0.1 Subnet Mask:255.0.0.0 Default Gateway- Nil Preferred Dns Server-127.0.0.0 Alternate DNS server- Nil Click Ok Click Ok In The New PC- Tick use the following IP Address IP Address: 10.0.0.2 Subnet Mask:255.0.0.0 Default Gateway- Nil Preferred Dns Server-127.0.0.0 Alternate DNS server- Nil Click OK Click OK Restart The Both PCs Probably now you can see the both PCs in the network.. If you want to copy/access a folder from Old computer Right click on the folder -----> Properties---->Select Sharing Tab----->Click Share this folder---> OK Then go to the new computer and click start----> run--->Type \\10.0.0.1--> OK Now hopefully you will be able to access your old computer's file in the new computer Quote from: dahlarbear on November 28, 2007, 04:46:33 AM 1.
