Answer» Hello Thanks for this forum
Is there a utility that will identify the motherboard on my HP dc7100 sff? Or is it as simple as looking somewhere on the board itself?
Thanks,It's probably a custom board but try:
a) Looking at the board for a manufacturer.
b) Belarc ADVISER: http://www.belarc.com/free_download.html.
c) SIW: http://www.gtopala.com/siw-download.html
Any particular reason that you want to know?thanks drmsucks
I recently did a cpu upgrade, and (following HP's manuals) I had to stick with a processor that has a 1mb cache. I read in forums and other docs, that I could have installed a 2mb cache processor. If the 2mb PROC will make a substantial difference, AND the mobo can tolerate it, then I will consider the faster proc.
I am not sure if that decision is based on the mobo or the chipset. I think the chipset.
Also..I want to identify the mobo just for KNOWING purposes.I understand but the processor type sounds like a BIOS issue - within the overriding constraint of the chipset. Have you looked for a BIOS upgrade?
Let us know if either id utility works for you.
Best of luck.HP has a few BIOS upgrades (this is an older pc), and they mention that they can handle 600 type processors. But no mention of the cache.
I see in the Intel page that all 600 processors come with 2mb cache, therefore, i will assume that I can use a 2mb processor by virtue of the comments in the bios release notes.
Seems reasonable.
Let us know how you make out.last one
do you think i will see a substantial speed increase with a 2mb cache proc? I took the pc from a 2.8 to a 3.6, and I CANT say I notice a massive difference. The pc runs win xp, office, firefox or IE; nothing too demanding.
I dont want to waste the money on the 2mb if I wont feel it too much.
THoughts?I very much suspect that you will not notice much, if any, difference.
But, all others are invited to comment to give you further input.Price it out and post the difference in dollars and we'll know whether it's worth it or not...Quote from: patio on September 19, 2008, 03:23:42 PM Price it out and post the difference in dollars and we'll know whether it's worth it or not...
I think that he has already upgraded to the 1 MB processor so the incremental cost will be the full cost of a new 2 MB processor - less whatever he can get for his used processor.drmsucks hit it on the head. I paid 59 for the 1mb (ebay). I am eyeing a 2mb for $38 and 2 days left. So I may be looking at almost 50 for the 2mb.
Costs aside, which are important, I just wonder of I am pushing a faster cpu on a slower board and chipset. You would think that going from 2.8 to 3.6 would cause a difference; I have yet to really feel it. My machine takes longer than expected to boot. I have run bootvis, but it doesnt produce the drivers REPORT that would educate me.
Thanks all for your help, NNABRIL - I'll stand by my original inclination that you won't be able to "feel" $50 worth of difference. Please let us know what you decide and how you make out.
Best of luck.Agreed.
