Solve : Installing multiple ages and types of printers?

Answer»

Hey Everyone,

I am not very advanced when it comes to computers but I am working on it.

So in my office I have two computers one like 5 years old ( windows XP) and one thats 1 year old with xp pro.

My printers are as listed : HP LJ 5n ( Older
HP deskjet 1120 C
HP DESIGN Jet 500 ( colour plotter)
Lex mark E220
Brother MFC 8460N

So.don't laugh but when I want to use these printers I have to get on my knees and physically switch the CORDS on the back of my computer ( sometimes 10 times a day)

How can I make all these printers accessable to both computers and maybe my laptop at all times without changing and wires. I think the two old HP's only take the parallel cords?

Thank you

Well, frankly, I'm wondering whether there's really a technical need to use so many printers; it seems rather BAZAAR. But, anyway, the two printers that require parallel ports are the main problems, right? Do both computers have a parallel port? If so, why not connect one of those printers to each computer? Printer sharing would allow using each printer from either computer. If you don't have this option, then I suggest ADDING a parallel port to one of the computers. This can be done by INSTALLING an add-on card such as Rosewill 2 port Parallel (SPP/PS2/EPP/ECP) Universal PCI card Model RC-304 - Retail. If adding such as card is added to a computer with a built-in parallel port, the additional port should appear in Device Manager as LPT2; the built-in port is LPT1.

The other three printers can be connected via USB, right? So, even if you don't have enough USB ports to leave them all connected, connecting and disconnecting is much easier with them. And, again, you should be able to spread these USB printers among the two computers as a solution to avoid connecting and disconnecting. Or, if that's not an option and you need more USB ports on one computer, then, again, an add-on card could be installed to add USB ports. For example: Rosewill 4+1 VIA USB 2.0 Add On Card Model RC-103 - Retail.
