Solve : Intermittent internet connection?

Answer»

Hello,
Sorry for total lack of computer jargon- I'm unsure about much of this so I will describe as best as i can.

My connection drops, from occasionally to several times an hour, for about 1 minute and then reconnects.

using the same computer and connection, this did not happen before a few weeks ago. I can not trace this to any significant change or new software from that time.

I am on a laptop, windows vista, connected to internet directly-no ROUTER, avast antivirus.
Connection runs from computer, to dish on the house. TOWER is 2 lots over, so i doubt it has to do with distance/signal.
the 'network center' informs me that i am still connected to the network but the network is not connected to the internet.
not a timeout issue- it frequently occurs as i am active.
i don't think it is being blocked by AV- i have tried disabling it and going to a 'safe' web site but the disconnection still occurred.

ISP tech support has been unable to help (not UNWILLING but unable, they have tried to be very helpful)- they have told me that the network is not experiencing outages, and they can detect signal strength via the radio and it shows no problem. i described the network center display/diagnosis and they said that it is not very dependable.  they even came out to the house and CHECKED it out- they replaced/tested my connecting cable, but like getting the kid to cough at the dr's office, no outages while they were here.i have an open issue with them for a few weeks now and will update this thread with anything they tell me.

what is happening? can i fix it? if not, is there something that i can do to better inform the ISP tech GUYS?

Thank you for any help you can provide. Quote

You must test the distance to signal connection if this is really not the problem to confirm any interference and check your Security settings. two lots is pretty far for a wifi connection. generally 20-50 feet is about where you'd start getting rather bad signals. When you say you have a dish on the house and the tower is two lots over, is this a community or commercial wireless internet service? Thanks for your responses. The dish is for a commercial wireless internet service. I obviously couldn't tell you how it works; when installed they referred to the dish as radio. The tower serves several miles in any direction; I am the closest customer to it. I don't know the difference between this and wifi, but when i connect wifi, (not available at my home) i use a separate area of the connection center. The one I need help with is referred to as a local area network.Actually, you left out one device when you described how you were connected.  There must be a radio transceiver (combination transmitter and receiver) connected to the dish, then to your computer.  The internet service transmits on one frequency to you and your transceiver and dish transmit back to the tower on another frequency.

You say it has been a problem for a couple of weeks, how long before that did it work OK?

My first guess is that you have a bad transceiver, and my second guess is that you are so close to the transmitter that you have too much signal strength which is overloading the receiver.  A simple in-line pad can fix it if that is the problem.  Your ISP should have them. Thanks for explaining the dish set-up. It worked properly for about 8 months.

The ISP apparently agrees with you; their next step is for a guy to come and check/repair/replace the radio.
