Solve : internet connection freezes on moderately long connections?

Answer»

OS is windows 7.  I have a very fast internet connection through a cable company. I am connected using an ethernet card/cable. I have no problems when running programs apart from the internet.  I have no problems quickly loading most WEBSITES. The problem does not exhibit on other pcs that I have on the same network.
This is the problem:
For the past few days, I have experienced a major issue when trying to access websites requiring a connection that lasts several seconds.  I first noticed this with gmail.  For example, when I try to SEND a message with an attachment that is 400 kb, the gmail basically freezes. If I run a bandwith test (speakeasy, for example), I initially get a reading of, say, 30 mbps but after a few seconds the progress meter freezes before completing the test and the speed indication slowly drops presumably because I have stopped downloading the test file. Another example, I tried to download a 6 mb file from CNET to upgrade a program.  The first 5 mb downloaded virtually instantly and the the progress bar stopped and the rest of the download did not complete.  (I tried this several times with the same result.)  While these problems are happening, I try going to different tabs in the browser and I seem to have no trouble accessing various websites that load quickly.  I have tried using Firefox and Chrome with the same results.  I did a system restore to the earliest available date (about a week ago), but it did not help. I would appreciate any suggestions. Quote

Can you post the error and program on CNET to be checked here? Have you cleared browser cache or temp files? Have you ran a scan lately with an up to date antivirus/malware/spyware? Thanks. I have cleared the browser cache (the problem shows up on multiple browsers). I have done malware scans.  The CNET download was just an example.  Any attempt to download a significant sized file has the same problem. (I was able to complete the download by resuming the file.)

What clearly is happening is that when I start an internet connection I get great download times anywhere from 25-32 mbps.  Within a few seconds, however, the download freezes and does not complete.  I have tried connecting the pc directly to the cable modem.  I had the cable modem replaced with a new one.  I had the cable lines to the modem tested (and on 2 other computers I get speeds of 25-30 mbps without the freeezing problem.)  I also tried using a different ethernet cable.  I tried uninstalling and reinstalling the ethernet card (in device manager).  NONE of these things seem to make a difference.

The problem is somewhat intermittent in that the bandwidth tests sometimes do complete showing a fast bandwith, but I think that is just a case of it sometimes taking longer than others before the download freeze sets in.

I am LOOKING for any other thoughts about what might be causing a problem of this sort.Problem is solved.  The problem was being caused by the Net Guard feature of McAfee. Some google searches on why downloads stop, I got the firewall clue and McAfee tech support found that TURNING off Net Guard resolved the issue.  Thank you again to jason for making a response even though it was not the solution. Thanks for sharing this info.  as I am not a Mcafee user. Me as well with others will benefit from posting the solution to your problem.
