Solve : internet does not work due to IP address problem?

Answer»

OS: Windows XP Home, Service Pack 3
Make/Model: Gateway Emachine
RAM: 1.46 GB
Protection: Kaspersky, Superantispyware, Malwarebytes
PCI Soft Data Fax Modem with SmartCP
Nvidia nForce Networking Controller
Type of internet connection: Local Area connection on this machine. Service is cable (formerly DSL when the problem started, idk if you needed to know that)
Desktop keeps trying to acquire network address. When I hit repair connection, message says "windows could not finish repairing the problem because the following action cannot be completed: renewing your IP address"
I have tried disabling and enabling connection
I tried reinstalling drivers (this seemed to start DNS client again as it would not start before but all of a sudden TCP/IP and DHCP are missing from the list which were there before, dunno why)

Was it ever working? Does it work on another computer?
Did the company give you a install disk for the modem?
Do you have a router? Do you have another PC and a local connection to the other PC using Ethernet cable?
How many times have RAN the the network wizard? Can you log into the control panel of the modem? Can you do the network diagnostics inside the modem control panel?
What is the model # of the modem?

Also, do you have another network card you can try?

Was it ever working? Yes. Does it work on another computer? Yes.

Do you have a router? Yes. Do you have another PC and a local connection to the other PC using Ethernet cable? No because the other PCs are wireless. this is the only one that's local
How many times have ran the the network wizard? Network setup wizard? Several. Can you log into the control panel of the modem? Control panel? You mean phone and modem options? Yes Can you do the network diagnostics inside the modem control panel? Hopefully what I've attached is what you meant
What is the model # of the modem? Don't know and don't know how to find it

Also, do you have another network card you can try? Unfortunately no

[regaining space - attachment deleted by admin]I'm not an expert, but I have rarely ever gotten the repair connection to work.
I have a home network and I couldn't get the network address to work on my second computer. What I did was go to Control Panel - Internet Connections, Local Area Connection - Properties -
In the Networking TAB, IR4 (Internet Protocol Version 4) - Properties - obtain an IP address auto
There is another protocol as well that you can try.
I don't know if this will help you, but I hope it does.
Have you tried calling the cable company? Sometimes they can reset your modem and that will fix it.When I said modem, I meant the cable modem. Not the dial-up modem.
So you have a router with modem? Is modem on the TV cable and the modem gos to the router with Ethernet? And wireless connection to the router works, but the Ethernet net does not?

On my machine the connections look like this:

As you can see, I hive the Ethernet (LAN) turned off and the Wireless on. But I can do it either way. I have to RUN a cable from the laptop to the router. My router is a combo modem and wireless all-in-one.

Often I have had problems with Ethernet cables. Somehow they get worn out. I haven to repair or replace them sometimes. Maybe you could try another Ethernet CableCheck your Wireless services startup type. It should be on Automatic.
