Answer» I have searched through the archives and can't seem to find an answer to my problem so I'm sorry if this is a repeat question.
I finally got my laptop working again - thanks Broni - but now my internet won't work. My desktop is connected to a ROUTER and I am trying to set up wireless access on my laptop. I believe I set it up correctly - it says that I have a wireless network connection to my router. I entered the SSID and WEP key but every time I try to open IE it requests my router username & password (Linksys WRT54g router). I enter the CORRECT information - I even made sure that I had it right by going to the IP addresss and verifying. My home web address shows up but there is no information, not even connection issues. I pinged Google and got this:
pinging www.1.google.com [209.85.133.99] with 32 bytes of data:
Reply from 209.85.133.99: bytes=32 time=55ms TTL=241 Reply from 209.85.133.99: bytes=32 time=43ms TTL=241 Reply from 209.85.133.99: bytes=32 time=44ms TTL=241 Reply from 209.85.133.99: bytes=32 time=52ms TTL=241
ping statistics for 209.85.133.99: Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 (0% loss), Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds: Minimum = 43ms, Maximum = 55ms, Average = 48ms
I've tried connecting directly to the modem but even that doesn't work. My desktop is directly connected to the router so I don't think anything's wrong with it. I'm at a loss and would appreciate help - again. Thanks in advance. Well, you defintelly have a connection. Did you try FIREFOX?I haven't tried Firefox but how would I download it if I don't have internet access? It says that I have a wireless connection but now I am getting the page cannot be displayed error and when I try to type in a web address it tells me that IE could not open search page. I noticed that my wireless network keeps having to acquire signal and is not automatic when I boot up. ALSO, whenever I look at the properties for my router it says disabled and I have to change it to WEP and enter my key. Is that why when I view wireless networks mine says unsecured? It will finally connect after I change the setting and enter the key but I am still unable to access the internet.
I set my internet protocol to use the specific IP address and subnet mask that's ASSOCIATED with my router instead of automatically finding the address and that's the only way it seems to be able to acquire a signal strong enough for me to even try to get connected. When I change it back to automatic, there is limited or no connectivity even though my signal strength is excellent.
I'm obviously doing something wrong but I don't know what that is. Thanks for any help.
Quote I haven't tried Firefox but how would I download it if I don't have internet access? Download it on working computer, and transfer it with USB memory stick.Once again, Broni, you are a genius! For some reason, Internet Explorer wouldn't work on my laptop but Firefox does. I really appreciate all the help. You're very welcome However, I'd like to find out, what's the problem with IE. What IE version?I believe it's version 6 - my husband is using the laptop now so I can't look. But after I was able to use Firefox it asked me if I wanted to upgrade to version 7, which I haven't. Didn't want to mess up a good thing. I also downloaded Avast for my anti-virus which is working fine as well. PCSS seems to be working okay on my desktop and I guess I'll keep it for now.
It's nice to know that there are places like this to get help. Broni, you need to change your experience level to guru! Thanks again. You're very welcome I'll change my experience level to guru, when I'll know EVERYTHING.....LOL
When you have a chance, try IE repair: http://www.theeldergeek.com/repair_reinstall_ie_and_oe_6.htm
