Solve : Internet in my room...?

Answer»

I am trying to figure out a way to get some internet out to my room. The bad thing is, that I am staying in my fathers SEPARATED garage that I fixed up into a room while I am in collge (gotta save that money for books!).

We do have wireless in the house, but I am assuming the distance and the fact that the garage has metal siding on it is blocking the signal. If I open my door and sit by the door, I can get a crappy signal, but not enough to be worth messing with.

I guess my main question is, what would be the best way to get a signal out in my room? One option I was thinking of was to run an ethernet cable hardwired from the main house wireless router, to a wireless router in my room. I would need about 50ft of cable to do this and a new router for $40 or so.

I also thought about running a phoneline out to the room. But wouldnt this mean I would need another dsl router, AND a wireless router?

THANKS in advance, and sorry about such a long question.. I look forward to hearing what everyone has to say about this!Quote from: dhampton82 on October 09, 2009, 10:45:20 AM

All you need is the cable. No need for the 2nd router, unless you just want the wireless. CAT5e cable is good for 100 meters.thanks, I do want the wireless in my room as we do have a few labtops, and some times I will be at the desk working on some homework. Sometimes I might just be kicked back on the BED reading some facebook.there is a device ( i don't know it's name ) it's like a memory stick which plugs into your pc and one plugs into your dads pc and sends a signal to your pc , good luck The OP already said he's getting a very weak signal from the wireless router to the wireless notebook.Quote from: Computer_Commando on October 09, 2009, 02:05:08 PM

i know that , , this device is strong and can work up to 100 yards Another option is run the Ethernet wire to the garage and set up a WAP (wireless Access point). This will give u wireless access.Go for then cable. Shop around. Make your own.midsail, thats what I was thinking, Im not sure if I worded it the right way to sound like it.

I ordered a 50 ft ethernet cable off ebay last night for $7 shipped. I plan on picking up a used wireless router off of craiglist next week. I couldnt seem to find any good deals on routers on ebay, so I will just try to keep my money in my town.

I will update this and let everyone know how it turns out in the next week or so when the cable gets here, and I find a router!!

Thanks alot for EVERYONES suggestions!!!I would buy a wireless N adapter and hook it up to a high gain 9 dbi antenna. You could also find 50 dbi antennas on ebay which will give you range of over a mile.Quote
