Solve : Internet Random Drop out, Please Help!?

Answer»

Hello Everyone,

I have an AMD ATHLON 64 3700+ 2.21GHz, 1 GB of RAM, i am connected to the internet with Telstra as my internet provider, i have a Telstra Bigpond Modem- Thomson ST Remote NDIS Device. This modem has 1 Ethernet Slot and 1 USB Slot, i am currently running my computer through the USB Slot and my xbox 360 through the ethernet slot, this has RUN fine with no problems for the last 6 months untill 2 weeks ago. At any given time the internet stops working. The computer STILL recognizes that the modem is connected and the modem lights still flash but the internet doesnt work. This happens whether i do or dont have the xbox turned on at the time.  At first i thought it was the internet provider (Telstra), or the modem, but then i discovered that the Xbox 360 would stay connected to the internet with no problems. The internet stays off until i restart my computer (My Computer ONLY, Not the modem) and then the internet runs perfect until it decides to cut out again where i need to restart my computer again. I have tried to sway the xbox and pc so that pc is on the ethernet and VICE versa but i still have the same problem.

Thank you for reading and i hope anyone can help!

MitchContact your system manufacturer and check the ip in your computer if the ip is 169 ip in your computer type this "netsh winsock reset"  command in cmd with admin rigths in vista and 7.Ignore the above post.

Have you recently installed any new hardware or software or had any malware problems? What happens when you do a "clean boot"?I know you said that you've had both your pc & xbox plugged into the modem for 6 months without problems. Now having said that the following might be mind boggling. Modems that have a usb & ethernet port are not meant to have both connections active at the same time. It is a convenience provided to the user so they can use the ethernet or the usb connection. It is not a convenience provided to the user so they can use both ports.

I don't know if in the 6 months that your internet worked you used both your pc & xbox at the same time to access the internet. If you didn't and now you are then this is why you are having the problem. Most modems given to users do not allow for multiple devices to access the net at the same time. In your case it seems the xbox is taking priority and keeping the internet connection and your pc losing it.

Try this: unplug your xbox from the modem and plug the pc to the ethernet port. See if you lose internet connection at any point. If you don't then you now know the problem. If you do lose your connection then there is SOMETHING else going wrong.
