Answer» Hi everyone! I am having internet connection problems and I have been trying to figure out what the culprit is.
The problem: The past 2 days the router would suddenly drop and lose its internet connection. The router would then try to reestablish connection. The first time this happen I thought it was just ANOTHER sudden drop, but it has been happening to frequently that it has become a concern.
How does the internet connection drop? 1) If someone picks up or call the home phone. The router will suddenly drop its dsl connection and then try to reconnect. 2) If the internet is being heavly use in the house. Playing games online, listening to music(playlist.com), watch videos on youtube. Normally under heavy load the internet will just go to a crawl. Instead it just drops and tries to reconnect. (The DSL light on the router would flash trying to ready itself and then look for a DSL connection. If it does not find it the first time the DSL light will flash and RETRY again. Once the DSL light finds a stable connection it would stay on then try to establish a DSL connection. The internet light is off until it finds a connection. )
What I have done: 1) Changed the telephone line connecting to the router 2) Try a different phone jack in the house and still the same problem. 3) Took the router off line for 2 hours unplug everything and plugged everything back in.
I have narrowed it down to 2 possible problems. a) Either the router is getting bad on me.. or 2) the home phone lines are bad in the house or outside line problem.
Other info: 1. Every time there is a thunderstorm or extremely heavy winds the connection would get interrupted and it would try to reconnect. 2. It has recently been colder then normal. (In this situation, the DSL light remains on solid, HOWEVER the internet light would go red or will be off. Usually after a few sec it would successfully be able to re-establish. 3. There is no static on the line, when someone calls and the router just suddenly decides to drop its internet connection. The phone connection remains stable You can still talk, the phone will not drop. 4. There has been some issue with people calling before and unable to reach our home phone. 5. It is normal that the router would drop its internet connection for some ODD reason at least once a week.
Router info: Westell 327W from Verizon.
I am trying to determine if it is the line or the router. Yesterday it crashed on me 6 times 2 times which took over 3 min to reestablish connection Today it crash on me 5 times, when I try a new jack it maintain a connection for only 1 min before losing the connection again.
Question: If it is the router where do I buy a DSL router? I thought most local stores only carry basic routers/switches with Ethernet ports? If it is the line: How do I determine if it is an outside line or an inside line problem? Who would be in charge of fixing this?
its only been 2 days, but if it is this bad now, it might get worst. I also looked at the system and connection log and did not find anything bad at all. the logs seem to keep clearing every time I unplug or turn it off, this is all I get:
Need help to figure out if it is line problem or a modem problem! I don't have any other tools to test the physical lines at home or to test the router.. Quote System Entries

I have had this setup for many years now, originally when it was first setup this way there was static on the line because the lines in the house was not use to the increase in noise. The DSL filters provided did not work to well at all, as even with the filter the phone had static. eventually it did take out the phone and internet so I had to submit a repair request through a neighbor wireless. They did send a technician out and they did something to the line. By the time I looked out the window it looked like they were taping something. I have no idea what they did, but the static is gone and the internet was running just fine.
The internet only started acting up these past 2 days. I check the phones again and do not hear any static through them. The calls are clear and nothing seems wrong with the phone calls.
What I mean for that line is if someone calls or if you try to call someone by just picking up the phone, for some reason it causes this interrupt with the internet service. Not just a short interrupt in which the internet drops and the router will just try to reconnect. Instead the interrupt causes the router to think there is no dsl connection so it searches for one.So this is a new problem with the drop put. But the filters did not work right from the start. DSL filters are required on every phone.
The alternative is to have a DSL filter at the point where the phone wire comes into thee house. That is what I did. I put the DSL modem right at the entry point. The DSL modem is first on the line coming in. Then the filter which feeds all phones. This gives me max separation of phone and modem. Not of the phones have any noise and the modem is never affected by the use of any phone while on line.
And I replaced the DSL modem for a better model and service did get much better.
However, I finally agave up on the DSL. The phone company just takes no interest in keeping the phone cables in good condition. I now use Com Cast.
You may need to get a new DSL modem. A company called two-wire makes units often used by AT&T.Try direct connecting first the ISP modem to one computer and check if incoming calls causes interference to isolate the router's drop connection.Sounds to me like it's time to contact Verizon again.
