Solve : laptop sees router but won't load websites?

Answer»

Hi,
I am having trouble connecting to a particular wireless network with my pc laptop. I can see the router and have very good signal strength, and while the laptop says it is connected, when I try to load any webpages I GET a time out error that says the website cannot be found. I followed some instructions I found for using the terminal prompt to get a new IP address, but that didn't help (assuming I did it right.) With the terminal prompt, I was able to ping google.com and had a response right back.

I am able to use this laptop elsewhere to connect to wireless networks all the time--this is the first trouble I've had. And other people can connect to this network that I am having trouble with. Could this be a firewall problem? What specifically should I check on my firewall (MacAffee)?

I am using a Dell 5150 laptop with XP SP2, and have tried IE 6 and Firefox. It is a Linksys router. (sudden thought: I connect at home to another router named "linksys"...could this be the problem?) I brought my mac laptop (OSX 10.4) in to see if it could connect to the problem network, but got the same thing: strong signal, immediate connection, good ping, but no WEBSITES.

Any ideas? Is this a public router? I have seen similar ISSUES when mac filtering is enabled, allowing a connection, but not doing anything with it. This may be as simple as verifying permission with the owner of the router.I tried the following TCP/IP repair commands, but still no websites loading. Ipconfig/all output follows.

Steps tried:
1. Reset WINSOCK entries to installation defaults: *netsh winsock reset catalog*

2. Reset TCP/IP stack to installation defaults. *netsh int ip reset reset.log*

3. Reboot the machine.

your connection to the router is FINE.
BUT
it seems like the router may not have a connection to the internet. Try rebooting the router, or telling someone else who owns it to reboot (your neighbor? )
