Solve : LCD Display Problem?

Answer»

I have a three-year-old laptop with a LCD display. I'm running XP Pro SP2 and have a GeForceFX 5200 graphics card. Recently, I've been having problems with the display. After a few hours of using the computer, the PROBLEM starts. Random pink and red pixels will appear around normal displaying black pixels. This is most notable when viewing text but occurs in other instances as well. The problem seems to come in waves, coming and going at random.

When I scroll down a page, the rogue pixels move up and down the screen accordingly. However, dragging the window around the screen rapidly causes more rogue pixels to appear around the text. Covering the the rogue pixels with the pointer removes the rogue pixel from view, but it REMAINS when the pointer is removed.

I don't have any idea what could be causing this and sincerely appreciate any help offered. Many thanks in advance....laptop model?Sorry I forgot all the other relevant INFO. Finals have deprived me of some much needed sleep.

Sophos AntiVirus, SpySweeper, and HijackThis! say my system is clean.here's a part of a screen cap of what it looks like:

[saving space - attachment deleted by admin]Try uninstalling and installing newly downloaded and up-to-date video drivers from nVidia. Thanks for the advice. I uninstalled the driver and the problem went away. But when I installed the LATEST driver, the problem returned with a vengeance. Now there are rogue pixels as soon as I see the boot screen. Plus the problem gets worse with every restart.

Does this mean my video card is fried? What video card do you have?Do you have a monitor you could try displaying on? I'd like to see if you get the same results on an external monitor.

-=EDIT=-

I've done a bit of looking around. Seems it could be a problem with the LCD or heat damage to the VPU. Since the bad pixels actually move when you scroll, only effect spots here and there and not lines, and have no problem without the driver, I'm going to guess it's the VPU.

When there's no driver, the hardware features of the video card aren't utilized, which is why you're PROBABLY not having problems without the driver. Problems with pixels on an LCD usually won't move when you scroll, and they most likely wouldn't go away without the driver. As to what can be done about it, there isn't much. The VPU is built into the laptop's motherboard in most cases.

Looks like the days of gaming are over for your laptop. You can uninstall the driver and continue to use the laptop in that way, but without the hardware driver installed, games won't be able to use the 3D hardware.Well, that's a bummer, but I feel better now that I know what the problem is. Thanks again for all your help. You could contact Dell and see if they can fix it, but given its age, they probably won't.
