Solve : Modem and Router IP conflict, I think?

Answer»

Thanks in advance for any help. You might just be saving a computers life. I have had this before and Linksys tech corrected it so anyway. I am using Windows XP, Motorola SB5101U modem, and Linksys WRT310N router. I can connect to internet fine with with just the modem on and when I PLUG in the router I get nothing.

Like I mentioned before, I think it was an IP confliction that did not allow me to connect before. This configuration with this computer, modem, and router has worked before after Linksys tech support assisted me, but my wife moved to another city and Time Warner put in their modem and wireless router. So I dont know why when I hooked this config back up it is not working. I should wrote that down lst time but here I am anyway. Please help if you can.We need more information.

Describe your setup in terms in order of home PC to Internet.

Let's say I have a PC at home, a wireless router, and a cable modem. So it would be connected like so:

PC --1)--> Router --2)--> Modem --3)--> Internet

1) Ethernet jack from PC to one of the numbered ports on the wireless router (1, 2, 3, or 4)
2) WAN/Internet port from wireless router to the cable modem's Ethernet port
3) Big black coax cable to Internet

So I'll ASSUME in your case that you should be connected like this:

PC --1)--> Linksys WRT310N --2)--> Time Warner Modem --3)--> Internet

I'm also going to assume that your Linksys WRT310N has its default internal IP address of 192.168.1.1. This means that your PC (and anything else on your network, like laptops, iPhones, DVRs, game consoles, etc.) will have a 192.168.1.x IP address.

So your PC may have an IP address, Subnet Mask, and Default gateway assigned to it like so:

IP Address: 192.168.1.100 (just assuming it's 100, since that's usually the first IP in the default RANGE)
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway: 192.168.1.1 (the internal IP address of your router)

Now for the connection between your router and modem. I did say Linksys routers usually use 192.168.1.1 as its default IP address, right? Unfortunately, everything else and their grandmothers do, too! That means your Time Warner modem may be using 192.168.1.1 for its internal IP as well! So your computer, when TRYING to get to a website is doing something like this:

PC: "Dude, I need my pr0n! IP address of...and I have to go through 192.168.1.1 to get there. Okay, Linksys router...check...192.168.1.1 again? Back to the router? Or to this Time Warner thingy?"

So what do we do about this? Either the router or the modem needs a new IP address. If I were you, I wouldn't touch the modem, since all the techs there will probably assume the default IP address when trying to PROVIDE tech support. So change the router's IP address to something else (like 192.168.2.1). This will also change the IP range that your computer and other devices get, so they'll have to be restarted after you change it.

(inb4 "dude, ipconfig /renew works as well!!!"--just trying to keep it simple)

Voila! No more conflict! Now back to the PC surfing deh pronz:

PC: "Dude, I need my pr0n! IP address of...and I have to go through 192.168.2.1 to get there. Okay, Linksys router...check...192.168.1.1 is the next hop. Time Warner modem...check. Internetz, here I come!"
