Answer» Alright, this is driving me nuts. I'm helping a friend set up a small network in which files are stored on one computer that the others can access as needed. Problem is, they can't all see the hosting computer for some reason. Windows cannot access \\hostcom\ When I click Diagnose, it attempts to identify the problem, then: Quote Windows sent the name to the DNS server and the server responded the name was unknown. I've tried clearing the DNS cache (completed successfully, no change). I've CHECKED and double-checked the network settings for computer 3, all seems right. It connects to the network fine, can access the internet through the printer, but still can't see the host computer. I've searched around, but haven't found anything really helpful. Maybe I'm not looking for the right things. Any suggestions?Hello quaxo! If I may ask, does computer 3 able to ping host computer? For some reason home networking is not so easy on Windows 7 and there are a number of users having problems. Here is one of many found in a Google search. http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_7-networking/windows-7-home-premium-network-problem-computers/945b15ff-9aa5-49e6-95f7-c6c2c7be7c55 Quote from: Geek-9pm on JUNE 07, 2011, 12:48:31 AM For some reason home networking is not so easy on Windows 7 and there are a number of users having problems. Quote from: jerryheavyarms on June 07, 2011, 12:02:26 AM Hello quaxo! Yep, no problem there. 0% loss.Ok, a little update. It's still not working on wireless but... I took it and did a wire connection straight to the router. Works fine. Unfortunately, it needs to be wireless. So what might be set right for the wired connection that isn't for the wireless that would stop this one computer from being able to access the host on wireless? I'm looking, but I can't seem to see what's different in the settings for the two Vista computers' network settings. Are all of the computers on at once? I one had a router that wouldn't allow computer to computer transfers wireless after i had so many connected. It simply couldn't handle all the connections - bought a better router and problem solved. Although Ive got my whole house wired up now so I don't get this problem anymore. Try borrowing a router - then if it works go and buy a new one. You could also maybe try resetting the router? I don't think the problem here is with the computers I think its just with the router - anyone else possibly agree? If it was the router, I don't think it wouldn't be affecting just computer 3. It's always just computer 3.Actually yes I wasn't fully awake last night. Are all the computers on the same workgroup? And do they all have individual computer NAMES? If there are 2 the same this may hinder the file sharing.Yep, set all the workgroups to the same. I'll have to double check about the names. I think they're all different, but I'll look again Friday when I go back there. They're using the wire on that one computer until we sort this out. Like I said, computer 3 works fine if it's wired, it's just the wireless part that won't let it in.No idea then quaxo... last suggestion is see how many PCs the router allows to be connected wirelessly at once, had an old one where they could connect but not see each other. Go to the properties of the Wireless adapter - does "Client for Microsoft Networks" appear in the list? Is it ticked? How about "File and printer sharing"? In this scenario, you should FIND that connecting via IP works even if connecting by host name doesn't (e.g. \\192.168.1.5\sharename instead of \\hostname\sharename). |
