Solve : My head hurts!?

OK.. I have a new office in my garden and my wireless Netgear Router in connected in the house to a desktop. FIRSTLY Ive just learnt that it doesn't need to be connected to ANYTHING, right?

So I plan to plug my router into the main phone ENTRY which is at the FRONT of the house and about 70ft away from my office. How can I achieve the best signal out there, if at all? and will that be OK for a signal upstairs for the laptops?

Could someone also confirm what a desk top computer and Laptop need to have in order to receive a wifi connection from the router?
