Solve : My internet just recently started slowing down, help!?

Answer»

OK, I'll try to give as much info here as I can, but if there's something I'm not mentioning, just ask. I have AT&T DSL in my home. Just LATELY I've seen a noticeable drop in internet related performance (youtube, gaming, etc). Previously when I would run the test on Speedtest.net, my scores would be around .50mbps download and 1.5mbps upload. Now it's around .40 download and .45 upload. I'm using a Linksys WRT54G router and the Speedstream DSL modem I've had since signing up with AT&T probably 10 years ago.

I run Super Antispyware, Malwarebytes and Auslogics BoostSpeed frequently and have been finding a few issues recently (with Malwarebytes) but they've all been REMOVED. I also suspected maybe someone was piggybacking on my Wi-Fi, so I changed the password and removed all the saved items listed as being connected, then reconnected my laptop, tablets, etc, making sure to name each one as I connected it so I would know which was which.

Also, I'm guessing that multiple devices connected and accessing the internet at the same time could cause the connection to slow down, but I have tried the Speedtest.net test with nothing but my desktop connected (hardwired, not Wi-Fi) and still got the same results.

Any suggestions? Could it be that my modem or router are pooping out?I'd test with nothing else connected except for 1 computer that is performing loopback bandwidth testing with speedtest.net as for .5mbps download and 1.5mbps upload sounds like other devices are hogging bandwidth to cause this low figure. If you have 1.5mbps upload then your download should be between 3mbps and 6mbps depending on what your ISP has allocated as the allowed bandwidth for whichever plan you have. Its usually a figure where the upload is 25% of the download speed, but I have seen some that different.

With DSL you also have to worry about lack of filters in your home on the phone line as for noise can cause issues, but this generally will cause intermittent connection and disconnections etc, as well as the AGE of the copper wire in the home, which if you have had it running on this copper for last 10 years your probably fine.

The telephone company / ISP should also be able to perform a loopback test between their site and yours for free just a phone call away and they can confirm if all looks well or if something looks like its running outside of the normal operating conditions between the DSL Modem and their site.

If your bandwidth is good with just 1 computer connected then add 1 device at a time and test again to see which device may be a bandwidth hog ( generally they are not bandwidth hogs unless someone is downloading or streaming video through them ). Keep adding your networked devices until you find the one that is causing issues. If no issues are found then its likely that you had too many people streaming or downloading content at the same time.Yeah, I realized when I read your post that I had that backwards. It was usually 1.5mbps download, .5 up. That said, I called the phone company and they did a few things on their END and sped it back up to normal, and then tried to get me to move up to a better! faster! cooler! package, which also, conveniently was more expensive, lol...
