|
Answer» Hey guys I just got ridiculous quote from best buy, they wanted over 300 bucks to network my 3 computers and encrypt them. That to me is just crazy. Now I have a good understanding of computers and I think if someone would take the time to answer this post I could set it up myself and encrypt it myself and save over 300 bucks. Thanks in ADVANCE for your time and help. I have a Netgear G router which is hooked directly into my routerYou have two routers? You should not use two routers on a small network. Who is your broadband provider? They should have sold you a router that does everything you need. New routers use secure encryption and have additional security features. But $330 is too much for home use. Here are some security TIPS. (No Change.) http://compnetworking.about.com/od/wirelesssecurity/tp/wifisecurity.htm Is your broadband DSL CABLE, WiFi, Cellular or other? Looking for someone to walk you thru it? You've got THREE different operating systems and wireless to boot (plus a printer). If it was that easy, your "friend" would have done it for free! Well... Perhaps someone will answer the call... While you're waiting, perhaps you'd like to do some reading: Home Network, Wireless Network and Computer Networking Made Easy Setting up your network - Windows XP Networking home computers running different versions of Windows Setting up a home networkQuote from: Geek-9pm on November 25, 2009, 06:07:50 PM You have two routers? It is by far easier to have the Modem, Router and Wireless on in one package. So you want a cable modem with wireless router built in. But in your case that may not be practical. You may have to run a wireless router behind the cable modem. What model is your net gear G? You will need some help with the configuration. But your provider should have a tutorial on their web site. In general, the router MUST have a different IP than the modem, but both should be in the same sublet. The modem is the gateway and does the DHCP thing. So you have to tell the router to lay off of the DHCP stuff. Hey dahlarbear, just wanted to say thanks for the articles. I got my network up and running with file and print sharing. I see now why it was an impossible task to walk someone through, but the articles made it very easy.I m glad to know that you solved it yourself Nice job. Now you've got a start towards solving any future "network" problems.Hey man those links you sent me, how do I save those? I want to put them in a folder in my email, in case I ever need them again. If I hit copy and paste it just pastes it in regular text. I would like to save it in link format so if I need it in the future I can just click on the link.Quote from: Juda on November 29, 2009, 05:19:39 PM Hey man those links you sent me, how do I save those?
