Solve : Network File Sharing?

Answer»

Hey,

I have a home network that has 5 computers on it, all running Windows XP, fully updated with SP2 ect. Four of the computers are working perfectly fine, they can access the internet and share files with the other computers.

The 5th computer (named "pcthree") is the problem. It is connected to the network by a Ethernet cable and it is running Zone Alarm Security Suite and AVG Free. It can access the internet and the other four computers, the problem is that no other computer on the network can access the files on "pcthree". The other computers can ping "pcthree", access the web server running on it and connect to it remotely via remote desktop.

When I type "\\pcthree\" in the explorer address bar of another computer, it shows the printer on "pcthree" and the shared folder, but when I try to open "\\pcthree\shared\" it asks for my user information. When I enter a correct username and password it rejects it and shows the enter username and password dialog again. No matter which username I use (my account, another users account or the administrator account) it will not let me into the share. It is not just the "\\pcthree\shared\" share that won't work, NEITHER will the administrative shares such as "\\pcthree\C$" or any other share I create on "pcthree".

I have tried turning off Zone Alarm, and re-running the network setup wizard, but none of this helped.

I Hope I have explained my problem well enough and included all the information needed for someone to help me, as any help at all is greatly appreciated.

Thank you in advance,
brent85.This might soud stupid, but have you tried setting the GUEST password on pcthree? I had a similar problem and once I set the guest password (left it blank) then the others could access the shares.

I tried turning on the guest account, and then setting the password blank, but it didn't work. Thanks anyway though !

I forgot to add that I can't even access "pcthree" from "pcthree". For example if I try to access "\\pcthree\shared\" from "pcthree", it still asks for, and will not accept my user information.

Thanks,
brent85This problem is really annoying me, is there anyone that has a idea what is wrong?

Thanks,
brent85.Try going to the properties of your network card and enable File and Printer Sharing.

Ok, File and Printer sharing was already tuned on, but I put "pcthree" in safe mode with networking and was able to access its shares then...

That may help. I would check the folder permissions.

The shared folder had read permissions for everyone, and full control for administrators.

Thanks,
brent85.Don't use blank passwords. You can't connect to a computer USING Windows XP wit a username and a blank password.

If pcthree can access other computers, why don't you copy from pcthree to other computers?

What are the settings for administrative tools->local security policy->user rights assignments->access this computer from the network and deny access to this computer from the network?

Are you sure there is no other firewall enabled? Quote from: viking on January 30, 2008, 07:33:49 AM

Oh ok, thanks. I disabled the guest account again anyway.

While that does work, it would be nice to be able to transfer files while sitting at a different computer. A workaround for that is accessing "pcthree" using Remote Desktop and copying files from it then, which is what I have been doing.

Access this computer from the network: Everyone, ASPNET, Administrators, Users, Power Users, Backup Operators

Deny access to this computer from the network: Support_388945a0

Yes, I am sure. The only installed firewalls are Windows Firewall and Zone Alarm Security Suite, and Windows Firewall is disabled. I do have AVG Free installed, but as far as I know it doesn't include a firewall.

Thanks,
brent85.When you say "a correct username and password", the username and password are valid on the computer with the share? Can you LOG on to that computer using those credentials? That user has rights on folders? (You say it's administrator but the best check is MADE simply by logging on with that username and trying to browse to that folder).Yes, the password and username I am using is valid on that computer, and an administrator. I logged on to "pcthree" with my user and I was able to access that folder, I defiantly had administrator access. Just to make sure, I added my user with full read-write control to the shared folder, and it still would not let me access it remotely. Also, I can use the same credentials to successfully logon to that computer using remote desktop.

Thanks,
brent85.
