Answer» I am trying to set up my home network (again) using the XP Wizard. I have 3 machines that connect to a Netgear WPN824 router that connects to the internet via a Speedstream 4100 DSL modem. I select the second option on the list - "residential gateway."
After I run the wizard, the machines show up in Network Places under Internet, rather than LAN. It did this to me last TIME too. I am pretty sure it is just a glitch, and everything checks out OK when I run ShieldsUp! at grc.com.
It is a bit disturbing though to think my shared folders are on the "Internet."
I have run the wizard multiple times and get the same reseult each time, except for once when the LOCAL system showed up under LAN, but the other PC showed up under Internet.
Any ideas?
Also, how does one "delete" a network and start over (besides rerunning the wizard)?
PKYou can't 'delete' a network so to speak.
1) Are you running the wizard individually on each computer or using a disk to go to each computer? As soon as you finish the wizard on the first computer, it gives you the option to do this. While it isn't always NECESSARY, it's something to try to make sure all the settings match up.
2) Are they all on the same workgroup? Double check that.
3) How do the other computers see themselves and the other computers on the network? So far you've only mentioned how one computer sees the others.
The only way to 'delete' a network would be to disassemble it. uninstall the drivers to the NICs, etc. I don't RECOMMEND you do this yet. But as long as the NICs are active, as soon as you plug a cable into the NIC it will attempt to connect to whatever network is there.1. Yes, I am running the wizard individially on each machine. So you think I should try the disk INSTEAD?
2. Yes, same workgroup.
3. Most times, each PC sees itself the same way (on "The Internet"). There was one time where the local PC was listed under LAN, but other PC was listed under "The Internet."
