Solve : Network Switch Question?

Answer»

Hi all,

SIMPLE quick question,    I'm setting up a small OFFICE with just plain wired network (4-5 computers) and one printer.

Can just a plain BASIC network switch work in getting 4-5 computers to share files among themselves and print, or would I need to get a router?

Please advise

The "switch" would be fine.

Within the following link, see the links in the "Networking How-To Center" subsection:
Windows XP: Networking your home or small businessYes, a switch is all you need to be able to print & share files among your pcs. You'll need a router if you want them all to be able to access the internet. So if you plan on connecting them to the internet in the future you may want to buy a combo router & switch now then buying one separately later. You can use switch for now and in the future if you will want connect them to other network, for example internet, you can connect switch to router later.make sure all your PC's are in the same WORKGROUP. Remember also SHARING is limited to only 10 simultaneous connections to 1 computer.
