Solve : New computer wont connect to internet...?

Answer»

Hi everyone im new on here and i have a problem with my new computer. My old computer is fine. I installed the isp disk i got from my isp and no problems. Went to install it on my new computer and it gets right to the last step of the setup and it says it cant find my ip address and to contact the tech team from my isp. Its a really old modem so might it just be that i need to get a new modem in order to work with the newer pc?

Many thanks.Matt001, Welcome to the CH forums. What kind of a connection are we talking about here? TruenorthTo check your ip adress go to START RUN type in CMD then type in ipconfig to see if it is listedOne thing to check , go to device manager & see if the modem is listed if not you must install it by using the driver for the modemHi, thanks for the replys.

Truenorth: Its a cable modem with a co ax cable running in and a usb running to a port on the desktop if that helps?

Xavier: Yeah ive tried that and i just get the message "no operation can be performed on local area connection 2 while it has its media disconnected" and the same message again just saying "local area connection".

Ive also googled the message i keep getting tried those answers too to no avail.

Also ive typed ipconfig /h to get it to tell me what command to give.

I havent tried the device manager, Where abouts do i find that? In not that good with computers. Ive tried to install the isp disk if the driver is on there but i just get to the last step and no further.

Many thanks Matt.

Matt001,To access device manager click on "start-control panel--system-hardware- device manager". Do this sequence when connected to the computer that cannot CONNECT to the INTERNET. Look for yellow question marks or yellow exclamation marks.report back with your findings.
Here is a link to a site that talks about your problem and includes causes and remedies. http://www.chicagotech.net/troubleshootingipconfig.htm   goodluck, truenorthFirst...what OS is on this new computer?  Vista?

You really don't have to install any software from your ISP in order to connect to the internet.

It depends on how you have the modem connected to your computer.  Are you using a USB connection from the modem to your computer...or an ethernet connection?

What you should do is uninstall the ISP's software and instead, use an ethernet connection to your computer.

Give this a shot and get back to us... Quote

Period.
Any errors in Device Manager? Yellow "?", or "!" marks?
Hi again, Checked the device manager and in yellow ? marks was "other devices" and then in that catagory was "ntl usb cable modem" is what moden im trying to connect with and "SM bus controller" I havent got a clue what the bus controller is.

Its xp home edition, its 2 years old now but its been at my house. Now i live at my fiancee's house and this is where im having the problem. I have an ethernet connection cable at my old house if that would help.

Many thanks again for your help. Matt.Try to start with some basics....

Turn off computer. Disconnect router, and modem from power source for 30 seconds.
Power them back on.
Restart computer.

If that doesn't work, bypass router, and connect computer straight to the modem.

If that doesn't work...
Go Start>Run (Start search in Vista), type in:
cmd
Click OK.

In Command Prompt window, type in following commands, and hit Enter after each one:
ipconfig /flushdns
ipconfig /registerdns
ipconfig /release
ipconfig /renew

Restart computer.

If that doesn't work...
Go Start>Run (Start search in Vista), type in:
cmd
Click OK.

At Command Prompt, type in:
netsh int ip reset reset.log
Hit Enter.
Type in:
netsh winsock reset catalog
Hit Enter.

Restart computer.

If that doesn't work...
Download, install, and run WinSockFix: http://www.softpedia.com/get/Tweak/Network-Tweak/WinSockFix.shtml
Restart computer, and check again. Thanks for all the help everyone. It was a driver after all that. All updated now and working fine.

Many thanks once again. Matt. Driver for what, if we may ask?The cable modem. Re installed the driver in the device manager and it worked after that.

Now its ok but i switched it off after id sorted it and switched it back on later this evening and it wouldnt connect again. When i opened explorer or messenger then clicked in the open window (not responding) would come up.

Then i restarted it and all is well again for now.

Does anyone know what could be causing this?

Many thanks Matt. Quote
