Solve : New router, lost ability to printer from laptop?

Answer»

I have a Dell Dimension 4700 desktop with an HP Deskjet 6540 printer and a router provided by Verizon, our local ISP. The router recently DIED (the radio stopped broadcasting a wireless signal) so they sent me a new one which I swapped out with no problem. I then Id'd the router on my Dell inspiron 1520 laptop, and was connected to the internet wirelessly with no problem. I then tried to print. I simply can't print from my laptop as I had previously done with no problem. I deleted the no longer working HP printer from my laptop list of printers and faxes, rebooted, and then tried to add a printer, but all the wizard could find was "Microsoft Windows Network", no printers. I then went to the desktop, re-ran the setup wizards for setting up a home network and a wireless network, and did the same thing on the laptop, and then tried to add a printer again, but the printer wizard only finds "Microsoft Windows Network". It doesn't find any printers. Any ideas as to why my laptop can no longer see the printer and/or how I can add the printer to my laptop?
Thanks for your help.1. Internet Connection.
a. Connects to internet service provider (ISP) via DSL phone line or wireless mobile?

2. Router.
a. Provided by Verizon.
b. Is this a wireless home router (with four wired LAN ports)?
c. Make, model number, version number. Look for sticker or ID plate (bottom of router?).

3. Desktop COMPUTER.
a. Dell Dimension 4700.
b. What operating system and service pack level; e.g. Windows XP Pro SP3?
c. Does it CONNECT with router? By wire (ethernet cable?) or wireless?

4. Printer.
a. HP Deskjet 6540
b. How does it connect to your network ?
(1) Direct connection to desktop computer via wire to:
(a) Parallel port?
(b) USB port?
(c) Other?
(2) Direct connection to network via JetDirect card (ethernet cable)?
(3) Wireless?

5. Laptop.
a. Dell Inspiron 1520
b. What operating system and service pack level?
c. How does it connect to your network? Wireless?Problem solved. The new router allowed the laptop to connect to the web, but not to the network. When I went into Mcafee on the desktop I saw that the ip address of the laptop was no longer listed. I entered the ip address of the laptop, and voila, the laptop saw the network, added the printer, and I was back in business.
Thanks for the quick response. That's why I love this place when I have a problem.Quote from: kealii21 on October 29, 2009, 08:03:18 PM

When I went into Mcafee on the desktop I saw that the ip address of the laptop was no longer listed.

McAfee what? What type of component needed the IP Address - Firewall?McAfee is the anitvirus, spyware, etc. software I use on the desktop. It also controls access to my home network. If the ip address of the computer seeking to connect to the network isn't listed within McAfee, then McAfee won't allow that computer to see the network. Once I saw that the ip address of the laptop was not listed, it was clear why the laptop was not seeing the network - the McAfee software was blocking access. By adding the ip address as being a trusted address to McAfee, it immediately recognized the laptop and allowed access to the home network, and thus to the printer. Why it stopped recognizing the laptop when the router was changed remains the mystery, but as long as everything works, I don't really care.Okay, thanks for the response.
