Solve : No Internet, even though it says I'm connected?

Answer»

My internet has been running through a direct LAN line ran to a router.  It has worked fine for several months until just a few weeks ago.  We had a power outage and ever since then I am not receiving packets and the internet does not work.  It says it is connected with a speed of 100.0 Mbps.  I have tried disabling then re-enabling and repairing with no results.  Windows says that it does not detect any problems with the connection.  I have also tried resetting the router, as well as unplugging the LAN cable from my computer and the router and then plugging them back in.  No results.  I don't understand why it suddenly is not working, even though it says it is.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.  THANKS!

Here's the stats for the connection:

Address Type:  Assigned by DHCP
IP Address:  10.0.1.3
Subnet Mask:  255.255.255.0
Default Gateway:  10.0.1.1
Physical Address:  00-0F-1F-51-51-4E

My computer stats are as follows:

Dell Dimension 2400
Intel Pentium 4 CPU 2.80GHz
2.79GHz, 1.50 GB of RAM

Windows XP Home Edition (Yes, I have original installation CDs)
Version 2002
Service Pack 3

I have and use regularly the following spy/adware programs:
SuperAntiSpyware
Malwarebytes AntiMalware
AVG
Web Of Trust (Firefox Add-on)

LAN Software
Broadcom 440x Driverhave you tried a different PORT on your router? I had two ports blow out on my router, either that or maybe the modem is bad?
Could be the router is bad all together as well.. is there a way that you can by pass the router and see if you have the same issues? What happens when you connect with out the router.

You stated you had a power outage what caused it?

Sounds like the router is going going ... Can you access the router maybe some thing need to be reconfigured.

Have to agree with Osmo sounds like the router is toast. Quote from: Rustys on March 25, 2011, 11:05:23 PM

10.0.x.y is not a router LAN address.  Should be 192.168.x.yTry to ping your router, you should get 3 or 4 lines that start with "Reply from".. or "Request timed out".. if you cannot get "Reply from"  there is a chance your router is dead..or corrupt firmware..you can try reloading the firmware (I call it software) but with lightning involved, I am leaning towards your router being toast...

Hope this helps some..

LarryI'm thinking (and that could be trouble, smile) that your router should be connected to the modem, if that is the case, the router could be working fine but unable to connect to the internet because the modem isn't working properly.. could that be your problem?? 10.0.x.y is not a router LAN address.  Should be 192.168.x.y

With that subnet mask it doesn't make any difference. The IP Address is provided by your Service provider and Router address for each company is similar but deffinitely not same. for example -
Cisco router has default IP for its routers 192.168.1.1
2Wire has default IP for its routers 192.168.0.1

More in detail:
IPv4 Address. . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.101 -  this would be your ip address
Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : fe80::6a7f:74ff:feaf:f886%14 This is your mac address of your router as IPV6
                                             or 192.168.1.1 simple ip

Make sure your default gateway is your routers address; in another word an RJ11 cable that comes from phone line goes in to your modem and from modem RJ45 cable goes into router which connects to your PC or laptop. Once you confirm the setting as discribed above, check all of the following one by one

Keep handy all your routing info handy, means ip addresses, login name password for router, your service provider etc. Be prepared for resetting your modem by force shutdown.in order to Reset modem push paper clip into back of you modem (it has very small about 1mm size of WHOLE which allow an opened paper clip to go in and then hold for 10 second, this will reset your modem.

now if you dont know your modem settig then call service provider howerver service provider wont support router unless you have purchase it form them only...

you MUST know your router page login and password, by default it should be admin, admin unless you have defned other wise. get in to setting and see if the settings are correct, if you need you can send me all 6 pages of router home page... resetting is the fastest but tedious way to resolve this issue. every time you connect a device check it by pinging it. if you do not rcv ping means you have broken connection. Also make sure you do not have an apipawell, i figured it out.  i tried plugging it straight into the modem, and now it works flawlessly.  i guess the switch went bad on the router.  thanks for all the advice, anyway!  take care
