Solve : no IP address?

Answer»

Last week I networked three pc computers using a Linksys Ethernet cable router with a 4 port switch (with help from their tech support). They all worked and received internet connection. A couple days later I accidentally unplugged power to the router and my computer (1 of the 3). When I BOOTED back up, the other computers are fine, but my computer will not connect to the internet. It won't give me IP address information (after doing command, IPCONFIG I just get a new prompt.) Linksys couldn’t figure it out because it isn’t an issue with their product.

I am obviously a novice at computer stuff. I'm not even sure if it is hardware, software or a networking problem. Any ideas? Thank you!
try doing a ipconfig -release followed by a ipconfig -renew

If that doesn't work I will need to know more about the computer.
Specifications/brand name and model and the version of Windows.
And do a ipconfig -all on the computer and post the result.

My computer is a Dell Dimension 2400 series using Windows XP version 5.1. I did the release, renew. When I type IPCONFIG -ALL the response is:

Windows IP configuration

C prompt.

Thank you!Do you get any error messages when doing ipconfig -release or -renew?there were no error messages with ipconfig -release, ipconfig -renew.
Right click My Computer and select Properties.
Select the Hardware tab and press DEVICE Manager.
Do you have any devices with a yellow exclamation mark or a red X?
If yes please post the name of the devices.Yes! Under Network adapters:
(Yellow Exclamation point) Broadcom 440x 10/100 Integrated Controller - Packet Scheduler Miniport
Yellow Exclamation point) WAN Miniport (IP) - Packet Scheduler MiniportThat's your problem right there. The drivers for your network card is not functioning. They may have been corrupted when the power was lost.

Right click the devices with an exclamation mark in the device manager and select Uninstall.
REBOOT the computer.
Windows should redetect and hopefully reinstall the drivers.
If it pops up with a Hardware install wizard after the reboot let it try and install the software automatically. When I tried to uninstall, it gives the message "Failed to uninstall the device. The device may be required to BOOT up the computer." It gave this message on each of the two devices I tried to uninstall. Is there another way to uninstall?

Hmm...
Try reinstalling the drivers for the network card instead.
You may have received a driver disc with the computer.
If not go here
http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/index.aspx?c=us&l=en&s=gen
and input your service tag. It should present you with the right drivers for your machine then.deerpark:
Thank you for how much you have helped me! I am still working on the drivers. I was able to install one from my backup disks, and am still looking for the other.

How do I MAKE the computer use the newly installed driver instead of the old one?It should use the new driver all by it self.
