Answer» QUESTION: Bought new wireless router for Dad last week to replace dead one. Dead one 9-yrs-old. His laptop 9-yrs-old, too. XP Pro...and make no mistake, honestly, this thing is QUITE a beast for it's vintage...and even now, too! Faster than my $400 5-yr-old lapper! Anyway, it's still crazy-fast and serves them very well. - New wireless router security starts at WPA-xxx, ETC. Dad's comp "SEEMS" to only offer/support WEP (which is a functional turd, I know!). AFAIK, in this situation, If I cannot get WEP encryption at a minimum, I have to leave him unencrypted? Any ideas??? - P.S. (Have asked manufacturer same question as of this posting.) - THX, all!
You can upgrade the wireless card in laptops to one that supports WPA. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4QVjgKAmlQw Mother Fletcher!!!! Your video link made me realize I forgot the OBVIOUS. DOH! I'm pretty savvy or resourceful normally. But I very often noodle around with D-tops and not lappers. Why this didn't occur to me? No idea. Probably I hadn't dealt with laptop physical H-ware replacement but once in doing a RAM upgrade 5 years AGO. It's one of those "no s**t? why didn't I think to look at that?" moments. One where you feel like a dope, a THANKFUL dope, afterwards - So thanks to all!!!
