Solve : OS wont detect Hard drive?

Answer»

I have two hard drives one is the one with my os on it and its just fine and the second one is 250G's. it just wont get detected. My bios can detect that the HDD is there but the OS wont. like when i go to disk management it say that its unallocated. i try to initialize it and it GIVES my the option to do it but after i click OK nothing happens. still not initialized. i tried doing this with easus disk partitioner but it give s me an error when it gets done creating a primary partition for the hard drive. but i really CANT do anything to make it usable.

Ohh the primary hard drive (C:) is the master and the pins are set the right way (master with slave) and the secondary is set to slave

ThanksOhh and they're ATA HDD'sWill it work in Safe Mode ?

Try again in safe mode, using disk management. They need to be formatted before Windows can use them...
If disk management is being stubborn DLoad install and use the Free diagnostics to prep the drive from the drive manuf. site...Quote from: patio on April 25, 2010, 06:25:24 AM

I think he knows that

Prepping with Mfr. software is fine, but if the PROBLEM is software related he would still have to correct that.. Safe mode will help determine that.. The Partition Wizard is FUNCTIONAL in safe mode.

I wouldn't assume...initialising a drive and formatting it are seperate functions...

And besides if the drive is prepped properly with the HDD diagnostics an does not work he would reach the same conclusion that it's his Windows install as the culprit...same as with your method.Quote from: patio on April 25, 2010, 07:23:19 AM

+1
Nowhere does it say he tried to format it, but it does say it displays as unallocated. What exactly is the difference between initializing a drive and formatting ?

Are you referring to partitioning ?
No.

Unallocated Space - Definition

Unallocated Space is available disk space that is not allocated to any volume. The type of volume that you can create on unallocated space depends on the disk type. On basic disks, you can use unallocated space to create primary or extended partitions. On dynamic disks, you can use unallocated space to create dynamic volumes.

And after partitioning any drive/partition it still needs formatted...although some utilities do this automatically...but as stated...never assume.I know what unallocated space is, partitioning, formatting, and I know the difference between basic and dynamic discs. At what point is a drive "initialized" ?I BELIEVE "initializing" refers to "partitioning", even if the entire drive is 1 partition. Initializing creates the partition table.

yeah i tried formatting it and nothing happened to was able to use it but when i tryed to boot the usb with windows copy on it it didnt appear on the disk drive list.I can't figure out what you mean by all that. Have you tried using the Disk Management tool in safe mode, or tried patios suggestion ?Quote from: BluerjB on April 25, 2010, 12:46:44 PM

1. when i go to disk management it say that its unallocated.
2. i try to initialize it and it gives my the option to do it but after i click OK nothing happens. still not initialized.
3. i tried doing this with easus disk partitioner but it give s me an error when it gets done creating a primary partition for the hard drive. but i really cant do anything to make it usable.
4. Ohh the primary hard drive (C:) is the master and the pins are set the right way (master with slave) and the secondary is set to slave...
1. OK
2. Not good. Test hard drive with drive manufacturer's software. Run all tests, if fails, return to manufacturer.
3. What error is given?
4. Good.
