Solve : PC sees laptop on wireless, but laptop does'nt see PC?

Answer»

I have a LAN with a PC connected to a combo 10 base t / wireless router and cable modem. Also, a laptop connecting wirelessly. The PC works fine. Internet connection and other older computers on the LAN. I see the laptop in Network Places, and can transfer files to it. The laptop however, connects to the net, but does not see the PC. Which is what I want to be able to print to. I'm pulling my hair out, because I've checked firewall settings (both Windows & McAfee) protocals and everything I can think of. Now what's weard, is McAfee sees both just fine, and sends current status info both ways. Both run on XP. When I try to connect to the PC from the laptop, it says it can't FIND the path, or permission settings might be wrong. Well, every setting I can find or think of are the same. I really would appreciate your input. Thanks! LorinSecurity settings.
Long story told short: you have to grant the laptop user account rights on the computer. Or just use a common user account on laptop and computer.Please don't be running two software firewalls (XP and McAfee) on the same PC. That's a recipe for trouble.

Does this all work with all firewalls disabled? If so, you may not have opened all the necessary ports.Thanks for your reply. These two used to communicate just fine when I had them connected both 10 base t. I removed the hard-wired router, and installed the combo wireless. I didn't change any other settings. I'm THINKING of connecting the laptop to the router with a cable, and see if they will see each other again. I don't know if my problem is in the router, or XP, or what. I'm not at my home now, but I am on the laptop, so any thing I try will take a couple of days to prove out. Again, thanks for your time. LorinOkay, sure; try that. If you're still stuck it would be useful to know a BIT more about your router.Hi everyone,

Well, I had the chance to connect this laptop to the router with 10 base t. No change. The PC sees the laptop, I can upload, download files to it, but the laptop doesn't see the PC. At least I've eliminated the wireless side of the equation. What am I missing here?

The router is a Netgear Rangemax Model WPN824

Thanks, LorinHow do you see the laptop? What operation do you do to see the laptop?
Something like:
Start->Run->\\ip_of_laptop
Or do you browse through "My Nework Places"?
Or did you edit the hosts file?From Rob:
"Does this all work with all firewalls disabled?" Did you try that yet?

Open up Explorer / TYPE the name of the computer you're trying to see / what happens?
