Solve : pci adapter workstation ethernet lan connection?

Answer»

My father built a computer an put in a pci adapter workstation ethernet LAN connection. Does he still need a NIC in order to connect to the internet? My understanding of the PCI adapter is it is used in lan connection where one computer is connected directly to the internet. Correct? What?!

Did he install a PCI NIC? Sounds like that's what you're trying to describe.

Tell you what, go to DEVICE manager (control panel, system, hardware) and look under "network adapters".

List what's there for a start...

And no, you are incorrect. An NIC is for connecting to a network, any network, not just a LAN with ICS enabled. In fact, it could be a stand-alone network with no internet connection at all.

Now what is it you're trying to achieve with this anyways, maybe we can help there too?Quote from: fsuwolf on May 15, 2007, 05:01:45 PM

computer an put in a pci adapter workstation ethernet lan connection.

Please tell me what this means??

Did it come in a box? Just jot down what the box has written all over it.Quote from: fsuwolf on May 15, 2007, 06:20:09 PM
The box says DYNEX "ethernet network workstation ethernet lan connection"
and 10/100mps fast ethernet PCI ADAPTER.
When I plug in his DSL line in then log onto the internet, I get nothing , when I go into CMD and type in IPCONFIG no IP address shows up. When I go into control panel network CONNECTIONS it has the following 1395 adapter #2 that is all. It should have local AREA network in this area as well. I have come to the conclusion that the PCI adapter is not a PCI NIC card for a wired network.

Hold on...what?!

Look, it is an NIC. Simple as. Are the drivers installed correctly, and are you plugging it in correctly?

What are you trying to achieve, and what have you already got in place?Quote from: fsuwolf on May 15, 2007, 05:01:45 PM
We just hooked the computer to his DSL line and cannot connect to the internet.

What kind of modem are you using, because as far as I'm aware, a DSL line doesn't just plug straight into an Ethernet PCI NIC.In fact, let's start from scratch.

Build up computer,
Get computer working,
Physically install PCI NIC (which believe it or not is what you have)
Install the current up-to-date drivers from the manufacturer for your OS

Now stop.

Is this computer going to be the one with the internet connection?

If so:

Setup the ISP software, including drivers for modem/hub/router.

Connect modem/router/hub to computer.

Go into network connections, and make sure "Allow other computers to share this internet connection" is enabled (ICS).

Connect other computers to the ICS computer via Ethernet.
