Solve : Poor WiFi signal??

Answer»

I recently moved into a new place with a few roommates. From day one I have had a horribly weak wifi signal. There is only one spot in the house I can connect from and I am practically sitting on the router to do it.

Everyone else in the house gets a signal just fine, except me. I have tried all over the house, and compared my signal to that of my roommates, and they connect fine. So I am GUESSING it has to do with my hardware, but I have never had a problem using any other network. My laptop is 4 MONTHS old, Toshiba Satellite A505, running Windows 7.

Does anyone have any ideas? Like maybe if there are settings I can change?Update

When I do connect to the internet, my computer tells me the signal strength is excellent, and I am getting 15mps. Still, every time I go to a webpage it is slow to load, and may not be able to pull it up at all. So my computer is acting like it has an INCREDIBLY slow connection, while at the same time, saying that it has a great connection, and often times cannot LOCATE the network at all.

INCREDIBLY frustrated. What did your provider say?
What kind of speed do you normally get?
You can Google 'speed test' and find a site that will measure your speeds.

As a START you and your roommates should all run speed test and compare results.

I don't know how your laptop measures speed, but it doesn't sound accurate.

Could be your antenna got damaged in the move, but could be a lot of other things as well. You just have to start eliminating things one by one.Speed test came back at just under 4 Mb/sQuote from: mrphy42 on June 06, 2010, 11:11:31 PM

Any ideas on what those things are?
