Answer» I will start out by saying that I live on a circus, and we move every 3 months, which means that we have many different types of connection to the internet on each lot. Broadband always, but sometimes one modem and sometimes a modem and a router, whatever the phone company guys are putting out in their area. In addition, I'm in Japan, so information about hardware is hard to come by, not only because my technical Japanese is pretty bad, but also because kanji is freaking hard.
So, my intent here is to get some specific information about connections. I have computers running Windows 98, which did fine with dial-up those many years ago, but since broadband became the thing, I was advised to use ROBERT Schlabbach's excellent raspppoe to make the 98's work with the modem. I don't know for sure, but I believe that the first connections we got were DSL, and there was no problem with the connection. Now, however, I know my broadband isn't DSL because the phone guys took the DSL filter off the phone lines when phone lines were hooked up. I just spent a very long time trying to make that system work with no satisfactory result, up to and including uninstalling the adaptor and letting Windows reinstall it. The PPPoE protocol was installed several times, the dial-up connection was created, but dialling in always resulted in an error MESSAGE that the computer I was trying to call in to wasn't answering.
So, I guess my question is: is this PPPoE protocol only useable with DSL connections? And does anyone have another SUGGESTION regarding an interface that will let my 98's get on the web?
As always, waiting with bated breath for your thoughts. Thank you.

1. Yes. 2. Obtain IP automatically, i.e. DHCP.
