Solve : Printing across the network?

Answer»

Here's the setup:

Dell A960AIO printer attached to a Dell desktop running XP Pro.

Sony Viao notebook attached wirelessly

Both MACHINES are networked by a DLink EXTREME N router.

I can not figure out how to print from the Vista notebook.

Printing works fine locally from the XP machine to the printer. I can share between computers. I can see the printer, and I can connect to it, and I'll see it in my spooler directory. However if I try to print it gives me an unable to connect error. Each system has the proper drivers, I've disabled every FIREWALL (the ones on the machine and the one on the router) and nothing works. I always get a cannot connect error when I try to print. But again, I can see the printer, and I can share FILES across the network. Something's just going wrong with the printing.

All of the other fixes I've found, such as installing it locally then changing the port, etc., haven't helped. You said that you have the right drivers but at the same TIME you are saying that when you tried to install the printer to the vista laptop locally it still fails? If so, then it's a driver problem. After all you said you can share files in the network. No, sorry, I wasn't clear there.

Printing works fine from the Vista notebook when hooked up directly to the printer. Furthermore, the XP machine can print through the Vista laptop when the printer is hooked into the laptop. Try creating the same user with the same password that you have on the xp pc in the vista pc. Log in with that user in vista and share the printer. Now try to print to that printer from your xp pc.
