Answer» The computer conserned is an old machine my friends dad dug out of the loft...
They've got a wireless network set up already, with the "Hub" (it's really a 4 port switch + wireless router) upstairs and the main PC downstairs (get's "Low" connection), this second PC is in the room next to the hub...anyway
Right, the main problem...
The second PC:
XP Pro Version 2002 no sp?
Intel P2 400mhz 128mb RAM
D-Link AirPlus G DWL-G122 Wireless USB ADAPTER(rev.B)
No conflicts in device manager
Was working previously
Detects network, but doesn't automatically detect Default Gateway or DNS
When manually input (gateway details taken from another computer on the network) it still doesn't connect.
Loads of sent packets and none recieved.
Yet it works fine with a BlueNEXT BN-WD54G??!
Oh it's USB 1.1
Any ideas on a fix/workaround? They're borrowing my spare dongle, the BlueNEXT one atm, but it'd be NICE to get it fixed and working again for them.
Also, the main computer, could do with some ingenious ways to INCREASE the wireless strength. Atm I think a wifi dongle is just plugged into the back of the machine, so I've suggested an extension to move it AWAY from the electronics, but anyother good ideas on increasing the signal strength? It is tediously slow.
I have suggested a repeater, but he (friends dad) has also been advised to buy a better router...opinions?
That one is a Win XP Home SP2 machine...if you need more specs I can try and get them for you.
Cheers guys,
SidWas it working previously on the same network? Have you checked Dlink's webpage for a driver update?yeah it was working properly before, but no I've not checked for an updated driver...good thinking. I'll give it a go and POST back if there is any change. There's always the option of >something like this<.
Cool cheers for the idea...a bit pricey but worth considering...
I think I'm gonna try a bit of a home craft design first, if it's ok with them...see if there is any gain.
I need to look for an up-to-date driver...cheers for the reminder!
